(101,728 posts)lots of time I don't want to spend, to get my apps, my music, and everything else working as it should. Inevitably I lose some functionality that I'd come to depend on, merely because some very useful apps are not updated and their creators have decided it too costly to do so.
So, ignoring the financial hit of changing phones so often, why the hell should we WANT to?
(and don't get me started on the refusal of manufacturers to continue producing smaller phones, like the iphone 5 or iphone se-- Some of us don't want a cellphone the size of an ipad! )

(51,974 posts)But I can't see the 11 as compelling at all, at least not for me.
The major improvement seems to be the camera technology, but I'm already well past the level I care to be when it comes to snapping pics.
Can't see shelling out several hundred bucks to upgrade just to zoom in more.

(101,728 posts)not all. Perhaps I customize it for my own needs more than most.

(51,974 posts)But I had very few problems when I upgraded from my 6 to to the x.
Of course there's always some lateral movement, trying to find the new way to do the old function, etc.
But it's improved a lot since the early iPhones.

(18,816 posts)I haven't had one last longer than that. I haven't ever gotten one paid off before it died. My first one the battery died. Battery is embedded so you can't just replace it. Second one just died one day. MIT repairable.
I"m on my 3rd one.

(2,730 posts)It works fine. I thought of upgrading but since all the cabling changed, nah. I don't want to buy a whole new set.

(61,675 posts)Finally gave it up because the phone function was erratic. I didn't mind having old apps and deleting stuff that stopped working.
I used a barely functioning old iphone for another 2 years, but finally upgraded to a Samsung s10 for almost 50% off. I discovered I really missed some of the special smartphone features.

(63,221 posts)to an iPhone 8, but I will keep this one until it no longer works. I don't have a need for more sophisticated technology. What I have is adequate.

(507 posts)When a friend bought the new iPhone X and told me what it COST! "But it only raised my monthly bill XXX amount of dollars" When I asked for how many years, all I got was a blank stare. I kept my iPhone 6plus till it died last Summer, literally DIED! Best Buy was running a Summer Special with my Carrier for iPhone 8. As other's have mentioned, I will not be upgrading until this one DIES!

(30,656 posts)My son was here making fun of me because my phone is so old that no upgrades are available for it. I don't care. I will use it until it dies.
My husband has a flip phone. He does not care, either. He will use it until it dies. Neither one of us uses our phone to play games. We do not care about trendy shit.

(6,477 posts)When it dies I'll get a simple phone like my friend has, I think she called it a track phone. She buys extra minutes for it at Wal-Mart, and said she'd teach me all about it when Wilma bites the dust.

(1,207 posts)is my third....in almost 20 years. It would have been my second, but I ran one through the washing machine. Horrible day. Cost me a dollar to replace it!
I am a librarian that regularly teaches tech classes to teens and adults. Please do not explain to me that everyone needs a smart phone "these days."
That is utter crap, and has just become another technological albatross on society. That said, I do not expect anything to change.

(54,055 posts)We are required to carry one while in the States, but I don't over here. Everywhere I see people living inside one of those things. My wife once lost hers and her world almost collapsed. She got another one, but doesn't live inside it any more. I see people with their noses practically glued to these things. Even tourists walking around in cities like Paris, London or Barcelona. What is inside that phone that is more important to you than what is right in front of your eyes? If I could shout, I'd yell, "look up and wake up!"

I refuse to get one for the exact reasons that you just outlined.
