Fans at a Portland Thorns soccer game this week appeared to boo President Trump as Armed Forces enlistees pledged to obey his orders as part of a swearing-in ceremony that took place during halftime.
The Oregonian newspaper first reported on the crowd's reaction, sharing video from Wednesday's game in which fans could be heard groaning and booing as enlistees were asked to obey the orders of the President of the United States.
he National Women's Soccer League game was scheduled to include the ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to Oregon Live.
At the conclusion of the swearing-in, the crowd switched to cheering the new Armed Forces members. The boos appeared to only take place when the president was mentioned.
The incident follows Major League Soccer being criticized for changing its Fan Code of Conduct rules earlier this year to ban political signs in stadiums.
The National Women's Soccer League had agreed to ban political signs at Thorns games as well.

(82,849 posts)They totally were directed at the mention of the recruits swearing to obey the orders of the president. I dropped the Thorns front office a little e-mail telling them that any repeat of this wholly unnecessary episode would cause me and Mrs. gratuitous to cancel our memberships (season tickets) for the Thorns. I don't know who in the Thorns office thought this was a good idea.
I'd liken it to the comedy club that booked Louis CK as a surprise guest performer last October.

(31,805 posts)The boos came when the part of the oath obeying the orders of any president was read. Putin would be proud of the booers.

(31,805 posts)When a Democrat is president and people similarly boo you will call them traitors.

(31,805 posts)The OP says they were booing Trump. I notice you are not challenging what the OP says. The Portland I know is full of anarchists. They don't want anyone to obey orders from anyone.

(29,322 posts)As noted in a feature story on the front page of The Oregonian's Sports section in 2004,[6] the Army had grown from a small group of dedicated fans to approximately 200 passionate supporters. By 2005, when the Army was the subject of a cover story by Willamette Week, its game day support was estimated at over 1,000.[7]
In 2008, the group's lobbying was credited with helping to convince the Portland City Council to approve a deal to bring Major League Soccer to Portland in 2011.[8][9][10][11] The Timbers Army were named the fifth most influential Oregon sports figure in 2010 by The Oregonian, two spots ahead of Timbers owner Merritt Paulson.[11] In the piece, sports columnist John Canzano said of the Army:
Drumming, chanting, scarf-wearing soccer supporters transformed overnight from a band of PGE Park rowdies to an effective and influential political organization. Their political clout ends up greasing the wheels on the effort to bring Major League Soccer to Portland.

This MLS decision the article references is about the Timbers fan base which were displaying an anti fascist logo.
MLS takes on Portland's most passionate fans over protests. What's this feud about?
PORTLAND, Ore. -- It's about three hours to go until the kickoff of the Portland Timbers' biggest game of the year, a Cascadia Cup clash against their bitter rivals, the Seattle Sounders. The match is arguably the pinnacle of Major League Soccer's Rivalry Week on a balmy Friday night.
On the surface, all appears normal. But the Timbers Army (TA), in conjunction with their Sounders counterparts, the Emerald City Supporters and Gorilla FC, have planned a protest over MLS's in-stadium ban on political signage. The league has banned the waving of any flag it deems political, including the Iron Front, a logo consisting of three arrows pointing down and to the left. The Iron Front was an anti-Nazi paramilitary group from the 1930s but is now connected with the growing "Antifa" (anti-fascism) movement in the U.S., which is comprised of amorphous, autonomous groups that stand in opposition to fascism and far-right ideology.
At the Fanladen, the de facto clubhouse of the Timbers Army, Sheba Rawson is attending to her duties as president of the 107ist, the organizational arm of the TA and the Rose City Riveters, the supporters of the NWSL's Portland Thorns. At the moment, this consists mainly of making sure the denizens of the Timbers Army section get their tickets with minimum fuss.
Rawson's choice of jewelry, a pair of yellow earrings in the shape of the Iron Front symbol, confirms where she stands on the issue: the image is one of inclusion.
