Their recent sloppiness regarding Kavanaugh pushed me over the edge.
I've been reading the Times daily (and usually attempting the crossword puzzle) since the mid-1970s. The paper has become a disappointment editorially and in their reporting. The Judith Miller/Iraq War fiasco was the beginning of my disgust but this latest episode pushed me over the edge.
In order to cancel a digital subscription, one has to engage in an online chat with one of the paper's "advocates." After reading my complaints, "Ashley" told me that my views would be expressed to the management however if I continued my subscription, they would give me a substantial discount on its cost.
In other words, it's all transactional.
Thanks, but no thanks was my reply.
Frankly, I'm saddened because I've always felt the NYT was a gold standard. Turns out it's fools gold.

(21,995 posts)After all, there is much more information available online than ever before.
DU is a great source for liberal/progressive information. National Review is a great source for the opposing view. There are many other sites within that spectrum.
In sum, there is a tremendous panorama of information available on Earth's database, also known as the internet. I don't have to financially support an outlet like the NY Times if I find their content to be repeatedly inaccurate, in need of correction or just plain wrong, (think Judith Miller).
I have great respect for your posts and responses, LAS14 and I hope my comments above answer your question.

(21,995 posts)But as I wrote in another response, the Times failed hugely when they advanced Judith Miller's reporting leading to the invasion of Iraq under George W. Bush's administration. It later became clear that Miller was fed erroneous information by Dick Cheney. The Times' acceptance of Cheney's misinformation contributed to our country's invasion and occupation of Iraq.
Sloppy and wrong.

(21,995 posts)"Ashley" offered me a discounted subscription rate if I didn't cancel.
I wasn't cancelling because of the cost. I hope that's clear.
The fact of the offer demonstrates that the NY Times is only interested in transactional business. They are not putting quality journalism at the top of their agenda.

(4,605 posts)And I was also a subscriber since the early 1970s and come from a family where we ALWAYS received home delivery and everyone did the daily and Sunday crossword puzzles. I am retired now and look daily at many news sources and papers, domestic & international, online, including (still) the front page of the NY Times. The sloppiness of this Kavanaugh business is stunning.

(6,972 posts)I cancelled my subscription which I inherited from my late Mom shortly after it was apparent that stupid ass, LYING Judith Miller became a cheerleader/water-carrier for the Iraq War invasion.
