(24,647 posts)According to statistics I found from 2015, the average killed on skateboards every year is 40 (most being on public streets involving a collision with a car). We have single mass shootings that kill more than that. And statistically (death and injury), these things are more dangerous than skateboarding:
Using a Ladder
Riding a Horse
Eating a Hot Dog
Women's Soccer
Football
Basketball
Hiking
Constipation
Cooking Dinner
Sex
And I'm sure the list goes on and on and on.
I'm so sick of these false equivalencies.

(32,640 posts)shuts down intellectual processes for fight or flight.
From an evolutionary standpoint it's great if you're being pursued by a sabre toothed tiger, when stopping to analyze alternate reactions to running would get you killed, but in the modern world, it can prevent one from even seeing that there isn't an actual attack, let alone a life threatening one. For gun humpers, their fear of "the others" overrides any data that indicates those "others" aren't the threat, but overreacting to a threat really becomes a threat in itself.
I believe that research has shown that the brains of liberals (not in the lefty political sense, but the classic tendency to "look at all sides of an issue" sense) have fewer fear reactions, while those farther away from classic liberal POV are more prone to fear responses and resistant to new data. Spock vs Kirk, as it were.
Conspiracy theorists usually have anxieties that they seek to frame as a response to an actual threat - they seek validation for their fear that others don't seem to have. I see a lot of that with people with dulalistic world views as well - to acknowledge grey area requires calm consideration, and outrage doesn't promote that.
Trump feels best when people are at each other's throats and chaos abounds. He promotes it. Those on the right functioning from fear and anxiety and dualistic world views see validation in him. He hates who they hate, and the gun industry needs fear of the "other" to stay in business.
Neither his fans nor the gun industry will EVER abandon their support of him, no matter what he says or does.

that "without my gun, my safety and masculinity is in danger" is based in logic, while those who aren't "one of them" are the ones not using logic.

(6,448 posts)if you want to offend an LGBTQ-hater like the Huckster, you use ammosexual or Glocksucker.
Most of the LGBTQ people I've ever met have had an extraordinary sense of humor and probably would allow usage of these two phrases on vermin like Pence-il dick and this particular piece of human waste.

(46,804 posts)There is a huge difference between everyday accidents and willful murder. Huckabee and others on the right make it sound like deaths from guns is inevitable and there is nothing we can do about it.

(2,309 posts)Is this what they do? Every time someone dies of a cause other than guns, they trot out this bullshit?
"Oh, I see someone just died in a skiing accident? I guess we should ban skis now, huh?"
"Oh, I see someone just died in a biking accident? I guess we should ban bicycles now, huh?"
My dog, it's tiresome.

(1 post)I remember when I was in high school a classmate smuggled a skate board into class and totally went off in the hall. We lost a couple dozen students that day before a good guy with a skate board stopped him.

(1,639 posts). . .of what has been expressed by others. But the point needs to be reiterated.
Skateboards can be dangerous, if used improperly.
Guns are designed to be dangerous when "properly" used.
