In his attempts to say, "NO" without saying "NO" But he obviously does not want the FBI investigation. And now we know why.

(16,994 posts)I want the FBI to get to the bottom of this because I know it will clear my name and put an end to these false allegations. Instead he sat there like a dear in the headlights. He is guilty as sin.

And for what it's worth, I always knew when my kids were lying to me by the way they would scream and yell and carry on about not doing what I knew they had done.

(11,972 posts)...because an FBI investigation (even if you're 100% innocent) is not something ANYONE wants.
That would have been his more graceful way out of it, if he were quicker on his feet. He could have said something like, "You may do your taxes 100% perfectly, but I'm sure you do not welcome an IRS audit, not because you did anything wrong, but because it's invasive and time-wasting and you can end up creating a problem you have to address just from an innocuous mis-remembrance or phrasing something the wrong way. Same with an FBI investigation. So no, just like an IRS audit, I am not eager for an FBI investigation, but I would fully cooperate with one if the committee decides there should be one."
Looked at that way, it was a bad question... but he had an even worse (non)answer.
