https://www.huffpost.com/entry/harvey-weinstein-sexual-abuse-me-too_n_5d80cc77e4b077dcbd6463efNo matter what happens to Harvey Weinstein, he will pay the biggest price there is. Even if he wins, Gayle, his whole life has been ruined, toppled, damaged, Donna Rotunno told CBS This Morning host Gayle King in an interview that aired Tuesday. And whether its by his own doing or others, thats the fact. And the fact is that no matter what we do ― and we can walk out of that courtroom with a not guilty and walk him out onto those courtroom steps, and he never gets to be Harvey Weinstein ever again.

(82,849 posts)Oh wait; he ruined his life all by himself, didn't he? Well, there's always a chance he could hook on with the Trump administration.

(18,837 posts)Trump is like a kid on the day the Sears Christmas Catalog arrived in the mail (for my fellow DUers old enough to remember the joy of that)...
...except instead of dreaming about toys, he swoons over dirtnozzles like Arpaio and Blagojevich and dreams about wielding his mighty pardon pen.
I don't know enough about Harvey to know if he has "said nice things" about Trump, but if he has, there are blue skies ahead.

(22,037 posts)Weinstein is a cad, a rapist and a skank.
Nonetheless, he produced many fantastic films.
I can separate the man from his work. Throughout history, there have been many artists who were despicable people yet we honor their art.
Weinstein should rot in jail but there are films he produced that I still admire. Much the same with Woody Allen and Richard Wagner, the opera composer.
Me.

(22,037 posts)Again, I hope he dies in jail after serving many, many years.

(22,037 posts)Weinstein is caught in the criminal justice system. It's almost impossible for him to escape conviction. He deserves everything he gets.
The poster said that he had no redeeming qualities. While that is true of his personality, it's not true about his movies, many of which were awarded Oscars. My point was clearly stated: it's possible to separate the person from their work. If you can't see that, then a tremendous amount of artistic heritage should be shunned because the creators were scumbags. Is that what you meant?
Jesus! Was it really that hard to follow?
lunatica
(53,410 posts)It was the successive argument that assumed someone was demanding his movies be withdrawn. No one was doing any such thing, but you wanted to keep arguing about something no one said.
That was and still is my point.
From my point of view, we're not in disagreement about Harvey Weinstein. He deserves much punishment.
Peace.

(53,410 posts)There are plenty of artists I dislike but that doesnt apply to their art. I understand that what I call true art is something that stands on its own, completely divorced from the person who created it. Thats why its true art. One example is Mel Gibsons last movie, long after society and he parted ways, is an excellent work of art. The movie is Apocalypto and is about the Maya people just before the Spanish arrived. I recommend it as a stunning visual work of art. He filmed it in the jungles of Yucatán with Mayan descendants.

(29,322 posts)Most of them are Tarantino films which I don't really like anymore except for Jackie Brown which the screenplay was based on the book Rum Punch. It was the only film I could sit through with Weinstein's name on it.

(2,431 posts)I work at a non-profit, indie cinema in Orange County. We do not play Woody Allen films. We do not play Roman Polanski films (except Chinatown because it's cool). And under no circumstances do we EVER play Miramax films (except The Crow because it just had its 25th anniversary... oh and because it's cool).
We're all part of the same hypocricy.

(35,454 posts)should those careers have been destroyed because those women didn't want to be raped?
PJMcK
(22,037 posts)And that's a silly observation since Weinstein's movies are already a part of our cultural history.
The women Weinstein abused deserved every measure of Justice they can get. Further, I hope he gets to spend the rest of his life in prison.
Nonetheless, many of his movies are wonderful and one must separate the man from his work. What's the alternative?
Me.
(35,454 posts)For as far as I can tell no one has suggested any such thing.
PJMcK
(22,037 posts)Harvey Weinstein is a criminal.
He made some fantastic films.
Those are two different things. One can still enjoy the movies but condemn the man.
Is that understandable?

(35,454 posts)why have you introduced it into the discussion when no one mentioned removing his films, this is a discussion about his assault of women, not his films

(22,037 posts)Is it really that hard to separate the man from his work?

(10,252 posts)Samsara, ya know, the realm of suffering that Buddha talked so much about. Harvey, in your case, it's the suffering of karma b rought on by you sexual misconduct, self-cherishing, and lack of respect towards women, who are not just pleasure-unit play toys.
But Harvey, you could still make it all worthwhile, by actually being a good person. Surely you must have learned something that would be of benefit tro yourself and others?

(4,112 posts)My husband is a manager in a national chain store located in a wealthy community in Westchester County, NY. Harvey is a frequent visitor. The first time he came in, hubby wasn't 100% sure it was him until he presented his credit card, which used a slight variation of his name.
Hubby says that other customers are never welcoming or friendly to Mr. W, often openly mocking and sneering at him, and one actually took a photo of him (ankle bracelet included!) with her cellphone. Harvey berated my husband for "allowing that to happen in his store". Hubby says that he told him that he was unable to do anything to change his notoriety. (I thought that was pretty funny!) Harvey then threatened hubby, telling him that he knew the company's CEO, and would hate to have to call him. Hubby reports that he just walked away to help other customers.
Bottom line, in about a dozen interactions, hubby says he absolutely believes every word from HW's accusers as he's shown himself to be a massively entitled bully.

Weinstein's "value" to the films he produced was in destroying the careers of the actresses who rejected his tentacles.
