Kennedy to challenge Markey in Senate primary

Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) will formally launch a primary challenge to Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) on Saturday, The Boston Globe reported. Two people close to Kennedy said he will make his announcement at a breakfast with supporters and local community members. Kennedy has already notified Markey of the primary challenge, one person added.

“Joe plans to make a campaign announcement this Saturday in East Boston. He looks forward to speaking with folks then,” spokesperson Emily Kaufman told the Globe.

Kennedy, 38, has been floated as a potential Senate candidate in recent weeks, setting up an intraparty generational clash with Markey, 73, a former longtime House member who is seeking a second term in the Senate after first assuming his seat in 2013.

A recent survey from Suffolk University and The Boston Globe found Kennedy leading Markey by double digits in a theoretical head-to-head match-up.

Markey is a good man and we need him in the Senate. Joe, hold your pants on. Who the hell thought of this stupid idea.

He won't get a penny in donations from me. He admires Senator Warren, I hope she has a sit down with him before he announces and advise him to wait.

I would not vote for you if I lived in Mass.

I really really like Ed and don't understand why Joe thinks it's necessary to challenge him. I hope Joe loses.

Go ED
