Election 2019: In Manchester (NH) mayor's race, it's Craig (D) vs. Sullivan (R)

MANCHESTER — Republican former state Rep. Victoria Sullivan will challenge incumbent Mayor Joyce Craig this November for the Queen City’s corner office, following last Tuesday’s municipal primary election in Manchester.

Craig, seeking a second term, topped the ticket in the mayoral primary with 4,983 votes, or 57% of the vote, while Sullivan finished second with 3,416 votes, good enough for 39%. A third candidate, Glenn RJ Ouellette, trailed in third with 317 votes.

Craig’s 57.27% of the vote is the highest percentage win in a primary by any candidate in the last 20 years.

Sullivan finished the night with 39% of the vote. Supporters say this is the same number former Mayor Frank Guinta received in the 2005 municipal primary before going on to defeat Democrat incumbent and former Mayor Bob Baines in the general election.

Sullivan won wards 8 and 9, her home ward.

The municipal election will be held Nov. 5.

“Thank you to the Manchester residents who voted today,” said Craig in a statement. “In the past two years, we’ve made meaningful progress strengthening our schools, growing our economy, and combating the opioid epidemic. I look forward to continuing our conversations with voters about all we have accomplished, and how we can continue to keep the momentum going to build a stronger Manchester.”
