"We're watching an ice sheet rapidly transform its state in front of our eyes, which is terrifying," says lead study author Mike MacFerrin, a glaciologist at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Shouldn't we at least erect some kind of monument with an encoded message explaining our refusal to stop the sabotage of our race's future ?

I think it is going to just keep going this way. The process will continue to accelerate and feedback loops will continue to cycle, spin, rinse and repeat. What is predicted for thirty years down the line will come much faster than expected. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes exponential.
We have had a heavy foot on the gas pedal for a long time and the pedal is to the metal and the road is finite. The big party is coming to an end. Everything comes and goes. Eat, drink and be merry for...

(17,912 posts)Usually I dont lean very far to the negative side, except when it comes to humans tendency to party on until reality slaps them in the face. Climate change and our inability change our ways falls into that category.

(2,275 posts)And if you're getting less than 25... go to hell. (Semi sarcasm!)
And if I'm unnerving anyone enough to consider buying a NEW car that runs on fossil fuels... well you piss me off too! Get an electric. Or move to a city and use trains and electric buses.
I'm being only semi-sarcastic... I'm that pissed.

(2,275 posts)Every roadside stop on the NJ Turnpike now has battery charging stations. If your state is BEHIND New Jersey.... fuck you too!
(all of the above is semi-sarcastic... I'm too pissed off to smother the point in 100% sarcasm... we MUST motivate change... and be semi-nice doing it!)

(4,168 posts)Every time I hear a climate change prediction, I do that math calculation to what I consider a more realistic expectation.
If they say "add 3 inches to ocean levels by 2100" I translate that to "6 inches by 2050".

(12,712 posts)So, I tend to be not so surprised when we get the rather conservative, (for many reasons) reports from scientists.
An interesting thing to note about ocean levels is that there are two factors involved. One is the ice sheet melting, the other is thermal expansion. So, water is added by the melts, but the temperature increases also expand the water and we know they are warming. Weeee.

(4,310 posts)It strikes me as a survival trait, that humans can live with our self denial with such ease.
This is how we endure - without going insane - the awearness of our own Mattia mortality.
