Parents at UN school don't want their kids photographed with Melania Trump
This Monday, a notice went home to parents of students at the United Nations International School in New York City, inviting their children to attend a ringing of the opening bell at the Stock Exchange — with their host, First Lady Melania Trump.
Most times, briefly sharing the world stage with an A-list political celebrity would be an exciting adventure, but as the New York Daily News reports, the First Lady’s last name is causing a problem for “some parents.”
“I am profoundly disappointed by the decision to accept this invitation,” a school parent and UN worker told the organization’s undersecretary-general in a letter, adding that the appearance of children with the First Lady “confers, by extension, on this U.S. administration, the endorsement of our school and our community.”
Meaning, kids shouldn’t be used for propaganda purposes.
According to the Daily News, the situation is causing a “standoff” between school administrators and parents, who are currently looking for a “diplomatic solution.” It’s not clear why just choosing not to go isn’t an option.
