They will look back and wonder WTF we were doing, as the planet collapses around them...

As our young people across the planet march today it still seems that efforts to keep global warming to the declared safe maximum of two degrees centigrade come at a price that many nations are seemingly not prepared to pay. I can understand some of the arguments from nations in the developing world, after all, we have had our industrial revolution, why should they not be allowed theirs? However, we also know that if we continue to react ineffectually to global warming it comes with potentially catastrophic costs for our grandchildren and their grandchildren.

We all know the statistics. When 96% of scientists in this field tell us we are essentially up shit creak without a paddle, how can anyone ignore this? Future Earth looks pretty desolate. A place without agriculture. A place without water. A place where billions of species are extinct. A place of massive migration of people. A place of unprecedented population pressures. A place with a shortage of resources, which inevitably leads to war.

Imagine if we carry on as we are doing. It is 2060. We have all shuffled of this mortal coil and our descendants are the inheritors of our earth. If we do nothing we can expect 3-4 degrees of global warming. The impact on the global economy will be significant. Damage to infrastructure, flooding of coastal regions, shortages of water, volatility in commodity prices, all leading to serious economic damage. Mass extinction of animals and plants is already underway. Without changing what we are doing now, by mid-century we will be committed to a loss of at least 60% of our bio-diversity, which as it has been evolving for the last 2 billion years is a feat indeed. The destruction of tropical forests is expected to lead to droughts in many parts of the developing world. Collapsing fish stocks. Acid Sea. I could go on but I am sure you get the gist.

It cannot be right that we are imposing such a huge environmental impact on future generations. I understand why the kids are marching. It is literally their future that those who refuse to accept global warning are playing with. I doubt they will forgive easily.

Just sayin'

I mean some of us have been dirty on our contemporaries for quite some time now.
