Every single day since November 2016 has been a new nightmare. There has not been one day that hasn't had some kind of new drama that challenges democracy and any sense of decency. Good people are challenged by racists and others who hate anyone who is not white, straight, male and christian, at work, at home by extended family it is debilitating to our spirit as humans and our country.
I honestly think this crazy man in the white house enjoys chaos, he can't function without drama. He has used it his entire life to divert attention from the horrible things he does every single day.
I have begun to take 2 days of "news vacation" every week in order to keep my health in check. The sooner this menace is out of the white house the better. I swear they will have to fumigate it and bring in a person to evict the evil from the place before the next occupant comes in.
The sad thing is, after he is gone, he will continue to crave attention and will use the MSM to get that just like he does now. He will never leave the news cycle until he has moved on to wherever he will go when he passes or is in jail.
Doctors have told me that they have people every day in their offices looking for anxiety meds and when they ask questions to get down to the cause it is almost always 45 and the current climate in this country. I don't really believe it will improve when he is gone. The racists have crawled out from under their rocks and feel emboldened to do lots of terrible things to our country. Pushing them back under there will be a challenge.

That America will just throw up its collective hands and give up.
THATS what keeps me fired up. I will NOT give in, and give them their way.
I will NOT give up OR give in. Period.

(8,617 posts)That was for an upcoming trip but my wife and I are actually planning to move to Panama to retire.. if our financial situation is stable.. and if Trump wins, we will move even sooner.
Panama has a great program called the "Pensionado Visa". There are lots of expats already there. It used to be a really good deal financially but over the years costs have gone up but its still better than most cities here in the US... plus is a beautiful place with great food and good weather depending on the location.
Trump has made me to begin to despise this country when just a few years ago during the Obama years I was so proud to be an American. Trump has ripped that right out of me.

(12,712 posts)that you are! You are just being and alive right now.
If you can pull back a little into that and relax into what you are, then you might notice that the mind and intellect can get very immersed and caught up in ideas and thoughts, which are secondary to what you are right now even though the churning tumult of ideas and information can be both alluring and addictive.
It is quite possible to just be an observer in the present. You can watch all this happening in that context knowing that things are always changing and the pendulum has been swinging to and fro for human culture since the beginning. They must and will change, so acceptance of that in both the phases you think are bad and also good can give you some peace and calm and more enjoyment.
You can feel with the body and experience the senses. Those seem rather concrete and immediate. When you get "lost in thought" it can become rather harrowing and just look at what that does to your equilibrium and the stress the thoughts are putting on the system. What good is that? It is somewhat self destructive and counterproductive if you want to be resilient and have health and energy for what you need to do.
So, pull back. Relax. Thoughts come and they go. Feelings change. Notice that and find some natural homeostasis. The body does that and keeps you alive and healthy. Does the mind have to cooperate and learn to let go, flow and be with what is happening as it is? Will all the preferences and judgments need to take such a high priority that one suffers more than necessary?

(5,591 posts)and I find myself doing what you have done: break days.
Old movies.
Old LPs and music to take me away.
A favorite book.
And a concerted effort many days to focus on the many decent men among us who champion character, humanity and compassion, animals and the earth.
The struggles are very real but a very stubborn part of my female psyche refuses to give in!

(17,981 posts)Enough books to fill a Library in the last 3 years. Every time I turn on the TV it is either Trump ranting about something or the pundits arguing over him. Or a couple of ignorant people claining how Trump is doing what we want him to do.
Whlle Trump and his corrupt family are living high and driving us further into debt. Stealing, bribes, corruption by him and His billionaire backers.
Depressed? How can we not be? Our country is collapsing before our eyes.

(43,141 posts)LONDON Deej Malik-Johnson, an elected representative at the University of Manchesters students union, came into his office on Friday to find a poem painted on a wall opposite it. The poem, Rudyard Kiplings If, is well-loved in Britain it has been repeatedly voted the nations favorite and is almost a pioneer of self-help writing. (Keep your head when all about you/Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, it advises.) It had been painted there by staff who manage the unions building as part of a refurbishment.
Mr. Malik-Johnson and his fellow student representatives were not happy. In a telephone interview, he said that Kipling, an English journalist, author and poet who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 and wrote The Jungle Book, supported colonialism and had racist attitudes. Mr. Malik-Johnson pointed to works like Kiplings poem The White Mans Burden.
Around 40 percent of the universitys students comes from outside Britain, Mr. Malik-Johnson pointed out. He said that views such as Kiplings did not fit in with a diverse body.
So Mr. Malik-Johnson and his colleagues painted over it with another poem by the African-American poet Maya Angelou instead. We werent trying to erase Kipling we did it deliberately so you could still see his words, Mr. Malik-Johnson said. It was to start a conversation.

(5,399 posts)Election night was one of the worst nights of my life, and Ive seen some pretty bad stuff in my day. I am in my 50s and am afraid in a way I never have been before. I havent watched tv news since Inauguration Day, because I knew they were going to pretend like everything was completely normal, and I just couldnt take it. I get my news from NYT, waPo, and The Guardian, and DU is an absolute life line for me.
Thanks for sharing, and thanks to the community here for injecting a little sanity into my life.

(1,366 posts)and frustration, and exhaustion. If I may be so bold to remind you to do self care. We can't get away from it because then we become numb. And while numbness is bliss, it is very dangerous in this climate. We are literally fighting for our lives.
Nature helps me, putting my bare feet in a creek, or river, focussing on the running water taking away stress. Walking in a field or forrest, smelling the earth. And, yes, even hugging a tree!!! lol!! Sitting at a small camp fire. There is something about reconnecting with nature that puts my mind right, ancient, almost.
For me, I'm not religious, but, I do Inipi (Sweat lodge) because getting in helps me, praying while you are drumming and chanting and smelling the herbs. Building a lodge, chopping firewood, etc. grounds me, there is something about blood, sweat, and tears that help.
I have been hosting Sweat Lodges and have been around them most of my life, but, since 2016 Standing Rock and what happened in our political atmosphere, there has been more and more a sense of urgency. People I thought that would never get in a lodge, are coming to them, I think they are searching for comfort, well...I know they are, actually!
Keeping ourselves whole in times like this is a task, but, a task that can save our sanity. To be mindful of our emotions, our mental state, our physical state, and our spiritual state, connects us to our whole self.
Not sure if pushing them (the hateful, racist bigots) back under their rocks will work, it seems they breed in that darkness.
Know that you are a child of the Earth, that you walk with the confidence of humankind, that you have 100's of generations of warriors, knights, and explores behind you, pushing you, guiding you. Know that your truth is worth fighting for, that good is on your side. That truth is on your side! You can do this...we can do this!

(63,221 posts)I really do. It is exhausting, discouraging and depressing. For my own sanity, I find that I sometimes need to take some time out to read or watch movies or go on You Tube and watch funny videos or listen to music. Something that is life affirming and that takes my mind out of the gutter that Trump always drags it down to.
He is poison. He poisons our nation, our minds, our spirit, our souls and everything that is good in this world. I know that we need to continue to fight against him, but we need to remember to keep ourselves strong and if taking a break every now and then makes it easier to cope, then that is what has to be done.
Take care of yourself!

(12,265 posts)However, I have no intention of stopping what I try to do to stop this shit show from continuing. I work for candidates I like, local, state and national. I will support our nominee no matter who it is, I may have to hold my nose but I will vote for him or her. I have a sign in my yard that says "Any Sane Adult in 2020", it has been stolen twice and vandalized once, but I just keep having them made so they may get me down but they will not defeat me!
We have to GOTV, we have to stop bickering and stop going after already seated Democrats. This damn litmus test of whether or not I'm a democrat is nuts! Yes damnit I am a democrat, have been one my whole damn life. May not be YOUR kind of Democrat but I can bet I've been one longer than some people who challenge me.
We have to get together, we either hang together or we most certainly will hang separately, a quote I said was Ben Franklin, but I may have been wrong about that one.
I am watching old West Wing DVD's this week on my two days off. No worries, I will hang in there, just needed to vent !

(1,068 posts)We can begin to end this nightmare and get rid of the tension that everyone is feeling. I was worn out on Election Night 2016 seeing those results roll in one after the other. Knowing that all of us Democrats are suffering this kind of a loss. Even if 45 loses the Election the damage that he has done to us will take time to work its way out of our Political System. And when he dies no big funeral. Just get the military to dump him in the same place where they put bin Laden.
If that last statement gets me to be judged by a jury, well that is the way it is. I can not help it.
