President Trump said going into Iran would be a "very easy" decision, but he's showing restraint. Mr. Trump made the comments during a news conference alongside Australian prime minister Scott Morrison Friday, after announcing new sanctions leveled against Iran.
"We are by far the strongest military in the world," Mr. Trump said. "Going into Iran would be a very easy decision, as I've said before would be very easy, the easiest thing. Most people thought I would go in within two seconds but plenty of time, plenty of time," the president said. "In the meantime, they have a lot of problems within Iran. Iran could be a great country, could be a rich country. But they are choosing to go a different way. There'll be a point at which they'll be very sorry for that choice. But I think I'm showing great restraint."
Moments earlier, Mr. Trump and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced the U.S. is leveling sanctions at Iran's central bank and national development fund, after the recent Saudi oil facility attacks. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier this week traveled to Saudi Arabia to address the situation.
Earlier Friday, during a bilateral meeting with Morrison, the president said potential strikes against Iran were "all set to go," but he added he isn't looking to do that.
"I could do it right here, in front of you. And that will be it."

(11,738 posts)We could probably do a lot of damage to Iran if we didn't care about civilian casualties or world opinion. We do have the most firepower in the world, but total war is not something we do anymore. We became a pariah nation during Vietnam because we were bombing the crap out of a little country that could never be a threat to us.
Iran is not a tiny little country that can't be a threat to us. They are a regional power and they are honestly doing things that help keep the Middle East unstable in their own interests. They cannot however pose a direct threat to us. If we fight them however, in the current standard of limited war, then we will get bogged down in there and many will die, for nothing.
Trump talks tough but the people around him know enough to know that we cannot engage in total war without EVERY country in the world condemning us, and we cannot win a limited war on Iran's own turf.
He's not showing restraint, he's hiding his cowardice and ignorance behind the idea of restraint.
It works right now because we do not need another war.

(54,378 posts)That was Cheney's "Defense" Secretary Rumsfeld at the start of the Iraq invasion. Iraq's military was a joke compared to Iran's, and the Iranians would be motivated as hell, where the Iraqis weren't, and we were STILL there ten years later. Putin and Xi won't even have to secretly supply Iran with sophisticated arms to use against us. You can bet that has already been done. Like that quote from the first Rambo film--if we send an invading force into Iran (and for what? Weapons of mass destruction?), we had better get ourselves a good supply of body bags. We'll need them.
Plus, this would play right into the Ayatollahs' hands, as the only thing that could bring the huge Iranian opposition/dissident movement to a standstill would be a military invasion from outside.
