can somebody please explain to me why Trump is able to prevent him from releasing information on the whistle blower and his accusations to the congress? I don't get it...isn't the IG - any IG - supposed to be independent? How is the person who is the subject of the whistle blower's accusations allowed to do this?

(102,138 posts)Congress. There is not a legal path for the IG to do so unless authorized by the DNI.
Ridiculous, but that's where we are.
The law is very specific because it is meant to protect national intelligence.

(4,107 posts)okay, so it's the DNI who SHALL report to Congress, but he refuses to do so because they consulted with the DOJ who ordered him not to comply with the law?

(102,138 posts)inappropriate (albeit "ass-covering" ) that he did so. As was discussed by a former IG under GWBush with Lawrence last night, this acting DNI is a 36 year military veteran and likely still confuses "chain of command" responsibilities with his civilian requirement to the constitution. This only underscores the abuse of power that this WH and DOJ under Barr engages in on a minute-by-minute basis.
