https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/why-is-greta-thunberg-so-triggering-for-certain-men-1.4002264?mode=ampHow can a 16-year-old girl in plaits, dedicated to trying to save the planet, inspire such incandescent rage?
-
Even for someone who spends a lot of time on Twitter, some of the criticism levelled at Thunberg is astonishing. It is, simultaneously, the most vicious and the most fatuous kind of playground bullying. The Australian conservative climate change denier Andrew Bolt called her deeply disturbed and freakishly influential (the use of freakish, we can assume, was not incidental.) The former UKIP funder, Arron Banks, tweeted Freaking yacht accidents do happen in August (as above.) Brendan ONeill of Spiked called her a millenarian weirdo (nope, still not incidental) in a piece that referred nastily to her monotone voice and the look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes.
But whos the real freak the activist whose determination has single-handedly started a powerful global movement for change, or the middle-aged man taunting a child with Asperger syndrome from behind the safety of their computer screens?
And that, of course, is the real reason why Greta Thunberg is so triggering. They cant admit it even to themselves, so they ridicule her instead. But the truth is that theyre afraid of her. The poor dears are terrified of her as an individual, and of what she stands for youth, determination, change.
She is part of a generation who wont be cowed. She isnt about to be shamed into submission by trolls. Thats not actually a look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes. Its a look that says youre not relevant.

They are to be obedient, not speak unless spoken to, available for sex with any man at any time the MAN or boy chooses, have as many babies as MEN say they should have WHENEVER men choose. IF they abort, the abortion is at the behest of MEN and only if the child is "undesirable" (ie: not white). They are to have NO choice in their lives, NO voice in anything and NO autonomy whatsoever at any time for any reason in any circumstance. why would limbo spend so much time on it if he wasn't getting payola?
that's why dems need to ask about talk radio re the mueller report and russian influence - going back to at least 2008 manafort (mccain campaign co-chair) using limbo to force mccain to pick palin, an idiot who was being courted by russian oil.

Of course, if Hogg was a young woman it would be because MEN want to silence her. In reality, if her name was Gregg Thunberg and he started a movement on climate change, the right would attack him just as fiercely. I'm sure Ingraham is on the kick Greta bandwagon over at Fox as well as the MEN.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's. What we had in the sixties is similar to what kids are doing today about climate change and guns. It was a very good feeling that we got back then identifying with other kids like us, standing up to authority while being demonized by those in authority. We did effect some good changes. And most of us did not sell out when we got older.
I envy kids who marched yesterday. We all should be out in the streets demanding that Congress especially the Senate do it's job of upholding the Constitution.

(1,002 posts)is one name I've seen for Greta Thunberg. Repugnicans like to claim that she has handlers who are using her Aspergers to turn her into a walking zombie spreading "propaganda" on behalf of the climate "hoax." They are completely enraged. It reminds me of Kavanaugh and the repug senate members during his confirmation hearings. The wave after wave of misogynist rage generated by these old white men was sickening.
I think that subconsciously repugs are terrified of the implications of climate change. It's a world wide conspiracy of globalists whose objective is to round up every person on earth into communist style collectives. It would be laughable if the consequences weren't so dire. The brainwashing that happens when you live on a steady diet of the 4 major repug brain foods - Faux, Limbaugh, Breitbart, and InfoWars is extremely effective.

These haters are nothing more than ignorant people acting unwittingly as surrogates to those who would continue to make profits at the expense of the environment and the future of our children and grandchildren.
We need a green new deal NOW - and NO, it doesn't have to be EXACTLY like what AOC came up with, but it sure as heck DOES have to be broad, sweeping and aggressive. And we need to roll over people who say, "Oh, but what about China and India?" because it is we in the west who must take the lead in the effort, both morally and economically.
Just remember: it is ALWAYS about profits. Always. The same applies to the healthcare debate we're having. In the final analysis, it is about the dollars lined up by big pharma and big health insurance companies against a single payer plan because they are afraid they will lose PROFITS. And yes, in healthcare, profit IS a dirty word, because the profit motive conflicts directly with the best interests of patients. As to big pharma and the claim that it costs umphteen million to 'bring a product to market', well, we need to rethink that and restructure the whole R & D portion of the industry with government subsidies. It should be PUBLIC, taxpayer funded labs developing these drugs, NOT for-profit pharma companies.

(4,394 posts)It was removed in the DSM-V and combined with ASD. Please, please, please educate yourself. Your comments are incredibly ableist.
Because as we all know "bright and teachable" blind people can learn how to see and "bright and teachable" people in wheelchairs can learn how to walk. So it's really "obnoxious" that they expect the rest of us to include braille on elevator buttons and ramps on buildings.
whathehell
(29,067 posts)It's on the ASD spectrum, but as we know, there are different levels of severity to the disorder.
She's clearly very high functioning and, no, I don't think I'm being "ableist"
for refusing to patronizie her, as I believe you are, with the 'soft bigotry of low expectations', absurd conflation of ASD to blindness and lameness to the contrary.
meadowlander
(4,394 posts)You seriously don't know what you're talking about. Again, please educate yourself.
Autism is a spectrum disorder with a range of dimensions. No two autistic people are the same. One person might have significant language impairment but fewer sensory issues. Another person might have severe social impairment but no problems with executive functioning. You can't look at Greta Thunberg giving a scripted speech and judge from how she looks what her level of impairment is or in which areas it is most significant.
"High functioning autism" just means autism with average or above average intelligence. It doesn't indicate the level of impairment in any of the dimensions of autism. So someone can be very bright, have a genius level IQ even, and find "normal socialising" - talking in "normal" tone of voice, knowing when it's their turn to speak, following what someone else is saying to them - excruciatingly difficult if not impossible.
And lots of people with significant social challenges can learn to mask by expending extraordinary amounts of energy trying to look normal. Once they run out of energy to mask they "shut down" or "melt down" and can either become mute, throw what looks like an embarrassing tantrum, or have to spend all day in bed alone crying to recover themselves. The point is that they shouldn't have to put themselves through that to meet an arbitrary neurotypical standard of "normal" behaviour. You could, you know, just widen your definition of what "normal" behaviour is a little. It's not like her speaking in a different tone of voice or being a little strident in her views is doing you any actual harm.
Autism is a form of social blindness. It impairs people's ability to read faces, understand emotions and get feedback on the impact that their words have on others. It's is an ADA recognised developmental disability. So it is not at all "absurd" to compare it with vision impairment or other forms of disability.
You're not inside her head. You don't get to set "expectations" for her. Why don't you set some expectations for yourself to try a little harder to understand where different people might be coming from?

(4,394 posts)You're all on board with saying a 15 year old autistic girl has an "obnoxious demeanor" but never mind she's "teachable"?
If she's bright enough, she can be trained to hide every trace of her disability! Just smile a bit more Greta, make eye contact, don't look so serious, stop wringing your hands. That's a dead giveaway at how stressed you are by interacting with people.
Never mind that "acting normal" all the time has serious long term consequences for your health and wellbeing. That the stress gives you insomnia, digestive issues, hives, selective mutism, hypertension, overwhelming fatigue, migraines, depression, depersonalisation... The really important thing is that normal people not be made the slightest bit uncomfortable by the weird way you speak or your lack of facial expressions.
Nothing ableist about that whatsoever...

(43,333 posts)as having Asperger Syndrome and then your attempts to reorient the other poster into something that you find acceptable. It came across as ober the top to me. But that is just my opinion, and you obviously can disagree with me as well.
People have a right to autonomous self-determination. The part where I said that poster was not being ableist had to do with your reply that tried to negate their use of the term Asperger Syndrome, a label that comes from Thunberg herself. I thought the conflation with Downs Syndrome that you utilised in your attempts was problematic as well.
I actually disagree with that other poster in regards to their dislike of Greta's demeanour, which they said was obnoxious. I do not find her obnoxious at all. At the same time, people are well free to find it so, and Thunberg having Asperger Syndrome does not give her blanket immunity from criticism.
Hope that clears it up.

for insisting on saying she has Aspergers syndrome. I was saying they were being "ableist" for calling her demeanor obnoxious but saying that as long as she has a high IQ she can be trained to overcome it.
But to be fair, there's also a degree of ableism in saying "Aspergers isn't really autism" - it is - and that "She's not *really* disabled... look how high functioning she is!" "She's obviously capable of hiding the signs of her disability and she's mostly doing it already. If only she would try a little harder..." Also, Aspergers is a subcategory of autism. Someone who says they have "lymphoma" isn't "asserting their right to autonomy by choosing the "lymphoma" label instead of the "cancer" one". They're just using the more specific category of the disease.
The point is you can't look at her and know how hard she is trying already and whether or not she actually is able to mask any more of her symptoms. Maybe she spends weeks practicing her speeches already and has hours of daily routines to set her up to look calm and composed on the stage and maybe she goes home afterwords sobbing in the car and then spends hours rocking when she gets home. You don't know. And you can't tell just by looking at her.
In my view, disabled people do get immunity from criticism for the symptoms of their disability to the extent that they have limited control over those symptoms (or the effort to exercise that control impacts their health). It's called basic human decency.
As I said before, you would never in a million years (I hope) say someone with Down syndrome is irritating or someone with Tourettes should just try a bit harder to shut up or that someone with cerebral palsy flapping their hands is distracting and they should really make the effort to stop. Autism is a neurological condition. Her brain is wired differently. And the symptoms are she has a flat tone of voice, limited facial expressions, doesn't make eye contact, takes things very seriously/literally, etc. Those are the symptoms of her condition. It is not acceptable to say "that's obnoxious" and "she should just try harder not to be that way" any more than you would say that about anyone else with a disability.
On edit:
She doesn't seem to have had an issue with the "autism" label in this article:
https://www.teenvogue.com/story/greta-thunberg-called-autism-her-superpower-in-post-against-haters
"Greta went on to explain that she doesn't often open up about being autistic because so many people misunderstand it as a problem or something to be fixed. But her silence regarding her diagnosis isn't because she's ashamed of it, Greta said, and it's certainly not because she's trying to hide it."
"And believe me, my diagnosis has limited me before. Before I started school striking I had no energy, no friends and I didnt speak to anyone. I just sat alone at home, with an eating disorder,"
"Greta doesn't owe trolls an explanation as to why she looks or talks a certain way"
Many women with autism develop eating disorders in response to the stress required to mask their symptoms. It doesn't surprise me in the least that she has experienced "no energy" and "an eating disorder". Aspergers is an actual disability. She should get credit for everything she has done despite it, not criticism for not making that extra effort to hide it completely.
