Vice President Mike Pence travels on Mackinac Island in motorcade
MACKINAC ISLAND, MI -- Vice President Mike Pence isnt hoofing it on Mackinac Island.
Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898, with the exception of snowmobiles during winter, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles owned by the local government. Travel on the island is usually restricted to foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, but Pence broke with the old tradition to travel from the Mackinac Island Airport to the Grand Hotel to speak at the Michigan Republican partys biennial leadership conference Saturday.
The island was buzzing Saturday morning with questions about how Pence would travel to the 4-square-mile land mass in surrounded by Lake Huron. Hours before the vice president was set to arrive, members of the Secret Service and local law enforcement were posted outside the Grand Hotel.
At 12:15 p.m., Pences motorcade traveled down Cadotte Avenue flanked by Michigan State Police on bicycles.
..................................................................
The use of motorized vehicles is among other unique circumstances that go along with safely transporting the countrys second-in-command to a small plot of land surrounded by Lake Huron. Pence didnt travel to the island by ferry, the most common way tourists use to get their fudge fix.
The Mackinac Island Airport has a 3,500 foot, lighted, paved runway that is capable of handling small aircraft year-round. But thats not nearly large enough for Air Force Two, said Mackinac Island State Parks Manager Myron Johnson.

Whats he worried about? Security? I mean, if its because someone can bring a gun in the island thats their GOD given right, right? If hes afraid of a little horsey ride being in the open like that, he shouldnt be in a 2A state

It's a city owned vehicle used for emergencies. Pence was bitten by a horse last year at the Kentucky Derby he is fearful of horses now.

That never happened. If he was bitten by a horse last year, he wouldve made a big deal out of it.

"Political celebrities take over each Presidential Primary cycle when the Michigan Republican Party stages its Leadership Conference on the island. In recent years Mayor Rudy Guiliani, Senators John McCain, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Governor Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, and the now late movie star turned politician Senator Fred Thompson turned up on Mackinac Island, as has Mitt Romney, who summered on the island as a teenager when his father George Romney was Michigans governor. (Michigans sitting governor is given use of a mansion on a bluff overlooking the fort and village.)"

(61,588 posts)Rich people in Michigan love Mackinac Island. This will annoy them. It's seemingly little things like this that change people's minds.

As a Michigander, I'm appalled that he would sully our beautiful Mackinac Island! I have been there a couple of times and my best memory is waking up in the morning with the cool breezes coming through the window and hearing the clip clop of horses' hoofs. If any of you DU'ers haven't been there, this is a special place.
He's just a horse's ass.
Get off our island, you creep and don't come back!

(53,410 posts)while endorsing them and praising their uniqueness and usefulness in a rich life is usually what politicians do. Actually its why they go around traveling in the first place.
Just a thought.
