An AM Joy panel discussed the reluctance of moderate and conservative Democrats to support impeachment, even as each day brings new alarming information about Donald Trumps attempt to strong-arm Ukraine into boosting his re-election chances by digging up dirt on Joe Bidens son.
Guest Jeff Hauser, executive director of the Revolving Door Project, warned that any continued reluctance to impeach Trump except at the ballot box in 2020 gives Trump time to do something even worse than he already has.
Given that the refugees posed literally no national security threat, Hauser continued, it proved that Trump was "willing to use the military as a prop to try to influence voters.
If he did that in 2018, "God only knows what he'll do in 2020," Hauser added. "So you need to do impeachment now to prevent even worse behavior than what we are seeing already, which is obviously pretty terrible.
And thats just what Trump can do to the election. Between now and 2020, he can also do an awful lot of damage to the environment, the economy, health care and start a war with Iran all the while lining his pockets with taxpayer money.

(26,697 posts)Hauser has yet to deal with the likelihood that a failed impeachment hurts our chances at the ballot box.
So lets comprimise. Find just three Republican senators who will vote to remove. Then we can press forward.

(15,373 posts)Waiting for GOP to support impeachment before proceeding means they control the process.
The Dem majority should control the process, with unrelenting hearings, and force the GOP to defend their opposition, rather than passively twiddling their collective thumbs while democracy goes down in flames.

If he stays in office another year, there won't be much left worth saving.

(1,736 posts)If Trump is removed from office via the impeachment process Pence becomes president.
Pence would be as bad as Trump, if not worse pursuing the same failed, destructive, wrongheaded agenda.

(3,363 posts)and Pence is implicated in the Ukraine scandal too. Pence is evil, but he's still not as chaotic and unhinged as Trump.

(6,546 posts)Yes, I believe we should impeach. I also believe we should be realistic about the possible outcome.

(6,546 posts)Do folks like Jeff really believe that if we impeached tomorrow, & the Senate acquitted next week (or ignored it altogether & did nothing, a la Merrick Garland) Trump would suddenly change his behavior & be a good boy? That's totally purely 100% delusional.
YES, we should impeach, but after the Senate acquits him or McConnell ignores it Trump is still going to have 15 months to do something worse than he already has. THAT WON'T CHANGE.
