General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just had a thought about people who write things and immediately post them on the internet.
In the "Old Days" , if you wanted something published, you had to write or type it out, then make a copy, and send it or take it to the place where you wanted to get it published..There was wait time. Maybe revise the idea, write it again, look at it for a while, or think about it, and possibly decide that this is not a good idea.

BUT NOW!!!!... all you got to do is type and press a key on the machine..and bingo, it is out there for all to see..
(at this site...it says below...POST MY THREAD..(small letters.)
Just like this particular post...instant publication. !!!!!
Before I post, I can ...Check Spelling, or Preview..
but what the heck...just post it for all to see. No time to wait, or think, or re - do the idea...just hit a key on the keyboard..and out it goes

We see this all the time. Some state senator in Virginia put one out last night, with out thinking. Something about ..people against guns....I don't know anything about her, but within a few days, this idiot could or should be out of a job...Other individuals who do not need to be named, do the same thing. I don't think that this is such a good thing. Oh my, they are coming to take me away...time to hide ...

(102,234 posts)But, the one thing I learned from it is to write something out multiple times and set it aside before sending, posting, or stating an impassioned, emotional, or controversial statement. I'm not always successful, but far more so than I would have been years ago.
It appears that those who use social media sans any filter are going to learn my lessons the hard way.

(18,470 posts)Unless Im running up against a hard deadline I let the paper sit a few hours before I submit it so I can take another look at it. Caught more than a few mistakes doing that.

(268,955 posts)These days some of them post stuff with their own name, but even now many of them write and post more offensive things hiding behind an anonymous user name.
The good news is that many of them are being exposed.

(38,420 posts)Many of them "are being exposed" or like the state senator from Virginia..

(43,142 posts)Throttling impulses is against freedom. People have the freedom to do dumb, imprudent, obnoxious things. It helps identify the loonies. Teach a crook to appear reasonable and all you get is a bigger, more adept crook. What, Martin Luther should have toned it down? Declaration of Independence should have been a little more contrite? No Articles of Confederation, just the Constitution of Confederates States?
Don't encourage whackjobs to hide well. If they have no control, let's see it. The rest of us have ethics and consider the implications of our words. We're not the dangerous ones, and society deserves to know the intent of the rest.

(4,341 posts)I understand what you are saying, but in this case she didn't give herself enough time to think, no one there to tell her "are you crazy? this could end your political career!", or an editor writing back to her "We regret to inform you that your inflammatory comment cannot be published", etc. so we would have never been able to know exactly where her heart and mind are, but because of the technology and her urge to post something she thought was extremely smart, now we know what kind of snake and low life person she is and the fact that she cannot hold public office, or own guns. So there is some benefit to it.

(38,420 posts)she is and the fact that she cannot hold public office, or own guns. " good point..
As I have said before, and I will say again, "This one is a very low watt bulb, maybe 2 or 3 watts. Kind of dim"

(22,114 posts)instant publishing is the digital character of all posts...that is, a lot of folks don't still seem to get in today's digital world, once something is published etc., the remarks/comments/posts/etc. of similar nature is literally around forever. Forever! It isn't on paper media only, it's literally everywhere, once you hit that button. I mention this solely because some people don't still seem to 'get' this.

(32,634 posts)... that says "Wait, do you REALLY want to post this?"
=x= Yes
=x= No
=x= Not sure
I'll bet that 5 second delay would cause a lot of junk to disappear.

(111,082 posts)Are we journalists or do we just play one on democraticunderground?
Everyone wants to be able to defend their arguments.
That's probably why so many go into the trash bin without ever being posted?
What is the value of the information put forward?

(2,218 posts)is that I think too long about what I am going to say, and usually conclude that it doesn't really add anything to the thread, I feel no emotional compunction to express it, I feel TOO emotional about it and should think some more, by the time I have posted it, the thread will have moved on slightly and it won't be relevant....
And in the end I just decide not to post at all.
I can't believe this one actually made it.
Wait...maybe....

(11,949 posts)Thought about writing a letter to the editor on a subject I forget. Early 80s.
My father being wise, did not tell me not to send it. Instead he told me to write it, wait two days, reread it and then decide if you want to send it.
It was not sent. Taught me a lesson I have learned till today.
DU is the only social media thing I engage on. No Facebook, no Twitter, no anything else.
Anytime new news hits Im always amused by the extremely emotional and heart felt, yet little thought out post I see here.
