I carry exams, graded and ungraded, students' grades and contact info, all of which is confidential information, as well as stuff some people would like to access and/or alter for nefarious purposes. Of course I use a locking briefcase, as do many other people with honest business which needs to be kept confidential. Locking briefcases were invented to thwart dishonesty, not enable it. You'd have to be really bent, ethically, not to realize that.

The traditional alternative is the heavy leather attache case (also locking) which some carry because of its flexibility -- you can always slip one more sheet of paper in, until years of such treatment leaves them stretching at every seam.

I have a wonderful leather bag that I travel with. It has numerous pockets, zippered compartments, will expand easily to hold extras, and kicks right under the seat in front of me on airliners.

Back when I was writing about woodworking and home repair topics, I went to various trade shows. So, I made a traditional-looking briefcase out of oak, with a aged leather handle I took off an old suitcase. It was a conversation starter, but not as practical as my leather bag. Not even close.

Technology has changed the bags or cases men carry, not feminism.
