How the GM strike could start a Midwest recession

The nearly 50,000 striking General Motors workers are just the beginning. Soon hundreds of thousands of people could be off the job because of the walkout.

The strike by the United Auto Workers union could even tip large swaths of the Midwest into recession.

The union and management were back at the negotiating table on Wednesday, but there was no sign of a quick conclusion to a walkout that began Monday over pay, benefits, the use of temporary workers and the fate of several plants.

GM isn't the only one affected by the work stoppage.

The company said some 10,000 American companies supply it with products and services, making things that end up on the cars like seats, tires, brake linings, windshields and computers chips. It also includes suppliers that sell GM things it needs to operate — hydraulic fluid for the equipment on the assembly lines, solvents used to keep the plants clean, and electricity to keep the plants' lights on.

making automobiles in the US, with union wages/benefits, I would hold on to that dearly. Also, it will spark resentment by non-union people who lose income as a result of the strike.

of suppliers, and transportation firms that supply the union auto plants that are going to have employees hurt by this strike, don't you care about them? This is not just about "scab" labor building cars in the US for foreign automakers.

If the strike goes on long enough to deplete supplies of GM vehicles, buyers may move on to other brands.

benefits and the end of part time temp workers which is starvation work, you should support the workers not...we should not kiss any company's ass. That is what got us into this mess. We are going to have to stand together in order to stop the erosion of rights in terms of employment...truth is some jobs are so bad, it is not worth working them in terms of putting a roof over your head and food in your stomach.

You think it helps you if more folks make less money? It doesn't.

raise everyone to a decent rate...not drag everyone down into the cesspool that jobs have become...time to make corporate American play fair...they all had huge tax cuts and repaid the generosity by shutting down plants in manufacturing and firing workers and cutting benefits everywhere. The strike is about temporary workers with no rights and forced to work in unsafe conditions...people literally die in non-union plans.
