Pa. DEP to propose stricter manganese standard as studies suggest risks to children
Pennsylvania environmental regulators are planning to propose strict new limits on the amount of manganese that can be released into state waterways in response to research showing the mineral can be harmful to children’s developing brains.
Coal companies had sought the change to reduce their wastewater treatment costs, but drinking water suppliers complained that they would be forced to make expensive upgrades at their downstream treatment plants — with their customers paying the bill.
Coal companies had requested the change, arguing that Pennsylvania’s current 1 milligram/liter manganese standard was stricter than other coal producing states’ and that limits contained in individual permits or enforced by the federal government are sufficient to protect clean drinking water.
