(25,183 posts)in your example, both courses of action have the same outcome. Only in the first situation, you've expended a lot of effort for that outcome, and it may detract from your next trip to the plate, keeping with your baseball analogy.

(25,183 posts)And the opposing team feels really good about having struck you out. If they're not terribly sportsmanlike about it, they will razz you and your team.

(16,616 posts)The batter in the example becomes "a batter who strikes out." It's probably not good for the batter psychologically either on his next at-bat because he's remembering that he just struck out last time.
Disclosure: I don't actually know what I'm talking about, since this analogy involves baseball.
