(296 posts)he never was a business man. He never was a CEO, never answered to a Board of Directors or shareholders. He was a corrupt salesman, that dealt mainly in real estate. If anything, he was a very well financed shyster (thanks daddy) without a shred of morality or compassion. He is a hollow shell of what could have been a human being, the true definition of a lowlife.
Dave Starsky
(5,914 posts)He has always, ever been the sole proprietor of a shady, insular family business.
He has never, ever been accountable to a board of directors, to shareholders, to regulators, to credentialing or certification organizations, ever. He has never performed in any way like the Chief Executive Officer of an actual corporation would have to behave.
I tell people that I know work for major companies that if their CEO behaved on ONE DAY like Trump does even ONCE several times a day, that the board of directors would hold an emergency meeting and fire that asshole immediately. No real company would ever want to be even remotely associated with that bullshit.

(11,736 posts)Please don't make me defend Trump.
Yes, he is a complete ass. Yes he does fantasize about being an autocrat. This however, is just an example of how he lacks the vocabulary of an intelligent person. I don't think it is anything sinister. It is Trump being a moron who can't think on the fly.
Iran is a different place since I "took office" would have been perfectly fine. He said toward the end, "when I became president" and repeated it as if he FINALLY found the words he was looking for.
FakeNoose
(32,637 posts)... and THAT'S why he's never prepared to say anything intelligent in front of a camera. Winging it is just fine because no reporters ever call him out on it. He's been getting away with this shit for way too long.
Caliman73
(11,736 posts)You are right, he is never prepared but he isn't intelligent. President Obama, was usually prepared, but he was also incredibly smart. President Obama could riff and react to things that were unexpected. He knew enough about many topics to be able to turn on a dime if the conversation did.
Trump, possibly because of cognitive decline, possibly because he just lacks intelligence has what is called "Poverty of Content". He uses the same words constantly when better words are available and he cannot seem to find words when specking extemporaneously.

(11,736 posts)Money allows people to evade consequences in a way that you and I could not. If I got in trouble for something minor, I probably have the ability to hire an attorney in private practice or a small firm to defend me. Someone with less resources than I would need to rely on a public defender or in civil court, might not be able to afford one. Someone like Trump has attorneys on staff who are aware of his situation who can deal for him, with any prosecution. Justice is not blind. Your ability to hire the right attorney and "make deals" avoiding criminal prosecution gives people with more resources the ability to get away with things that would send the average citizen to jail or prison.

(18,628 posts)I've been meaning to make a post of how Trump just uses the first word that pops into his head for his version of mangled English.
Yesterday it was a "perfect conversation", the day before a "powerful wall". Then how he didn't want Biden to "create to the corruption in Ukraine".
Trump is an unqualified idiot who pulls facts and words in general out of his ass.

(5,733 posts)I cannot stand him and want impeachment a.s.a.p., but I think he was going with something like, "When I took over responsibility for the United States." His conduct, however, would automatically make one lean toward autocracy.
Caliman73
(11,736 posts)He desperately wants to be the "boss" of the United States AND he is a dottering fool who lacks the vocabulary and intelligence to express himself well.

There were 9 other instances of Trump obstructing justice outlined in the Mueller Report, and he has not been impeached or indicted.
"when I took over the United States" doesn't even rise to the level of a crime, so how will those words destroy him exactly?

(54,370 posts)A friend of ours was stationed in Moscow, and he had been after us to visit for almost five years. I just never found the time. His time there was drawing to a close, and he insisted, so we finally booked a trip in December. BAD move. 23° below, I've never been so cold. I wasn't prepared, so he gave me a Chechen hat he had acquired on a trip to the Caucasus.
This was right around the time when the Chechens were blowing up stuff right and left in Russia. He lived in a compound where many foreigners lived, so there were armed guards at the entrance to every apartment building. One of them started to unshoulder his rifle when he saw me. My friend had to reassure the guard that I was a friend visiting from the West who had forgotten to bring an appropriate hat.

(5,395 posts)I just applied my usual business techniques. Come up with big ideas, expect others to make them real, assume the business was running well, and scoop the cream off the top in personal profits.
(And I had my excuses and denials for stuffing up all lined up nicely.)
One thing is for sure, Trump has legitimised a grab for power and money for a lot of politicians. Service to the public good is no longer a political ideal, it's just the acquisition of power and money that now motivates a large section of the government.
Problem is, in the back of his mind, and for most of the GOP and supporters, they know they are doing it wrong, which creates a feeling of insecurity. How do you get over that? Well, you ramp up your efforts in regards to acquiring power and money.
Then there is the moral sneer and cruelty aimed at minorities. (aka not white, too young to vote people)
If it was found that parents locked up their kids in cages, they would have authorities around like a shot. Yet the government can do this, and all is OK?
