IMHO, I do not think that Barr was appointed to protect Trump.

I suspect that Barr was brought on board to protect the Republicans from the damage that Trump was doing to the party. They wanted to use Barr to obfuscate and cover up the crimes of Trump and the attention he was bringing to their own involvement with Russia or any of their other misdeeds. Trump was saying out loud and doing out in the open things that the Republicans agreed with but were used to keeping hidden. Trump was blowing their cover. They needed legal help to squash any investigations.

I think that he was carefully chosen behind the scenes and subtlety "presented" to Trump as some one who would be loyal and protective of Trump and he jumped at the chance to bring this "Roy Cohn" unto his team. They needed Trump as their useful idiot and this idiot required a complaint DOJ. I think that Barr goes much deeper than Trump.

Trump would love him because he believed in strong Presidential power and the Republicans would have someone who would also play ball in covering up and protecting Trump - which would help lessen the damage Trump was doing to the GOP. Barr is so far out of bounds that I have to think he has the full support of Republicans for their own reasons. I just can't help thinking that there is much more to Barr than his support of Trump. He is a lawyer and had to realize that some of what he is doing would possibly create eventual legal jeopardy for himself. It seems to me that this goes way beyond Barr's loyalty to Trump. Loyalty to an entire party who shares your goals and agendas explains this more to me. Anyway, like I said, just my humble opinion.
