The constitutional pardon power is limited, in that a president cannot pardon someone whos been impeached.
If Trump is ordered to resign and actually resigns, I suspect Pence will be informed by the GOP Congress that pardoning Trump will cause them to immediately impeach Pence.
In short, Trump fucked up in ways he cant bullshit his way out of.

(50,533 posts)Having to impeach a man the GOP is as "all in" on as they are with Trump is going to fuck their party for a generation. If Trump resigns, they're probably hosed for at least one and possibly two election cycles, but they can get back into it by 2028 at the latest.
Trump's demise will probably bring back the smoke-filled room in the Republican Party; they know that if party insiders would have chosen the 2016 candidate, it wouldn't have been Trump.

(279 posts)The president can pardon a person who has been impeached for any underlying crimes. What the president cant do is pardon the impeachment itself. At least that has been my understanding.
