The problem is that unless it is exactly like the racial discrimination and internment you experienced, you don't recognize it.
The US has been donating and selling arms to foreign governments for over sixty years for precisely that purpose - it isn't a subject American newspapers and television networks are comfortable airing, and obviously it is not a subject you have remembered when you have seen fleeting mention of such things.
