9. A few things to consider...

1). He's not saying the Senate would vote to remove him, so he's leaving room for Trump to "vindicate" himself, which...if he sticks to his current course...won't happen

2). He clearly does not want to be on the wrong side of history and go down with Trump

3). The House would have to drop an air-tight case in his lap for a serious vote to happen

4). Assuming the House does that, every Republican who sides with Trump will own that.

But what strikes me here is that however sincere the statement would be, it kills the "it will pass in the House and McConnell won't allow it to come up for a vote" theory...but all of the caveats above would have to prevail for it to happen.

McConnell decides not to have the trial until after the election to protect republicans in swing states from having to make a tough vote. I think if he does do that that will help us though and hurt republicans even more, but it is still possible Clinton's senate trial wasn't held until after the midterms.

Whensoever the Senate shall receive notice from the House of Representatives that managers are appointed on their part to conduct an impeachment against any person and are directed to carry articles of impeachment to the Senate, the Secretary of the Senate shall immediately inform the House of Representatives that the Senate is ready to receive the managers for the purpose of exhibiting such articles of impeachment, agreeably to such notice.
...
Upon such articles being presented to the Senate, the Senate shall, at 1 o’clock afternoon of the day (Sunday excepted) following such presentation, or sooner if ordered by the Senate, proceed to the consideration of such articles and shall continue in session from day to day (Sundays excepted) after the trial shall commence (unless otherwise ordered by the Senate) until final judgment shall be rendered.
