(18,837 posts)1). He's not saying the Senate would vote to remove him, so he's leaving room for Trump to "vindicate" himself, which...if he sticks to his current course...won't happen
2). He clearly does not want to be on the wrong side of history and go down with Trump
3). The House would have to drop an air-tight case in his lap for a serious vote to happen
4). Assuming the House does that, every Republican who sides with Trump will own that.
But what strikes me here is that however sincere the statement would be, it kills the "it will pass in the House and McConnell won't allow it to come up for a vote" theory...but all of the caveats above would have to prevail for it to happen.

(2,785 posts)McConnell decides not to have the trial until after the election to protect republicans in swing states from having to make a tough vote. I think if he does do that that will help us though and hurt republicans even more, but it is still possible Clinton's senate trial wasn't held until after the midterms.

Upon such articles being presented to the Senate, the Senate shall, at 1 oclock afternoon of the day (Sunday excepted) following such presentation, or sooner if ordered by the Senate, proceed to the consideration of such articles and shall continue in session from day to day (Sundays excepted) after the trial shall commence (unless otherwise ordered by the Senate) until final judgment shall be rendered.
