Vladimir Putin May Have Just Sent a Signal About Trump's Secret Server
This is just getting started.

Whatever is on the Secret Server must be one doozy of a national security threat. Through his spokesman, Vladimir Putin is saying, don't release these conversations or...I will first. And, if that happens, more than simply this president* may go down.
.................
It is possible that Russian influence-peddling has infected both the entire Republican Party and many of the more prominent conservative interest groups allied with it. (Money in politics is now a matter of national security.) As somebody, and I don't remember who now, said on television this morning, without Ukraine, Russia is just Russia. With Ukraine, Russia is the Soviet Union. If the President* of the United States is involved in any way in that, the roof caves in.
There's no telling what information is contained in the Secret Server and elsewhere in a White House that has been reconfigured to resemble a conspiracy to obstruct justice. This, I promise you, is just getting started.

(2,565 posts)It is really going to take self-discipline not to wear a t-shirt that says, "I told you so."
I will work to stay on the high road.
And on a more serious note, I hope that DT doesn't send a bunch of troops off to be killed in the meantime, thinking it will distract us. It won't.
Time is of the essence.

(10,252 posts)the tape MUST be released. It's as if a bank robber told the FBI, don't go looking in my backyard for hidey-holes. Devin Nunes (and others) must be sweating bullets

This thing stinks.

(10,721 posts)...demand to get their hands on that server. Whether they will get it or not is another question. They've been pretty well stonewalled up to this point, so I struggle to be hopeful.

(5,499 posts)It seems like he wants 3 things really:
1. Sanctions lifted
2. The price of oil to be above $75 a barrel
3. Ukraine
Russia has a lot to gain by destabilizing our government. A mass scandal involving our top people might just provide the window of opportunity they need.
Putin is 66. And he is Russian (they don't tend to live to be old). You figure at some point he puts the plan in motion.
1. Release a massive amount of dirt on US politicans (there might be some Democrats involved as well)
2. Start a war in the middle east
3. Invade Ukraine
It could be a real shit show.

(44,972 posts)Drinking, smoking, etc. Putin obviously lives a healthy lifestyle (as far as I can tell he neither drinks nor smokes), and has access to best medical care, and he is not overweight and fit, so I wouldn't count of him dying anytime soon.
Buckeyeblue
(5,499 posts)Not smoking helps. Staying active helps. But getting into your late 70's/early 80's with any semblance of good health is more of a genetic luck of the draw than anything else.
I'm sure someone as calculating as Putin knows exactly where he stands.
LisaL
(44,972 posts)So, again, don't count on Putin's dying any time soon. So if Putin knows exactly where he stands, just based on his parents alone, he might expect to live at least another 20 years. And potentially much longer, because medical care has improved, and is able to prolong life better than in the past.

(5,499 posts)But if I were a cold, calculating dictator who had a plan to become even richer, I might want to strike while the iron was hot. But also while I could still enjoy my handy work.
But I also think the Russian people are getting restless.
But I'm just speculating.

(44,972 posts)Putin is a young man compared to him. Putin got the good genes and good health habits. I don't envision he is thinking he is going to croak any time soon.

(16,254 posts)But, then...I thought about all the Republican congresscritters who visited Russia on July 4th, 2018 (am I right), and never really gave a reason for doing so instead of celebrating the U.S. holiday at home.
Me thinks we are about to get a real lesson in international relations.

(9,670 posts)Historically, though, our government worked feverishly to protect us from the thuggery.
It looks like Trump's regime is trying to outdo Putin's in actually ALIGNING with the enemy to undermine its own constituents.
It's in Putin's best interest to keep the proof of the collusion under wraps, though if discovered, it wouldn't exactly be a surprise.
The surprise is that we let the fox in the hen house through the front door. What a damning moment in American history.

(58,618 posts)So I don't consider the Soviet Union reference as accurate.
IMO, the true reference is that with Ukraine, Russia moves from being the Russian Republic to becoming the re-birth of the Russian Empire.
Putin doesn't want to be a commissar, he wants to be a Tsar.

(44,972 posts)The write of the article is interpreting something Putin's spokesperson said that way. But spokesperson didn't say anything of the sort either.

(12,694 posts)LisaL
(44,972 posts)The author is somehow interpreting that from what spokesperson has said, but spokesperson hasn't said that either. But I suppose the idea would be similar to something like this-if someone is threatening to release your naked photos you release them first so they don't have a hold over you.

(10,726 posts)I apologize profusely, but as much as I want to understand this (and want Trump out and the Repubs shown as the criminals they are), I still don't:
--Why would they want Trump or others to release the tapes of those conversations first? that would also compromise the man they put in office?
--Surely those tapes hold compromising information that would make Russia look bad and uncover criminal activities they participated in? why would they want those made public?
Would someone please simplify this for my brain this morning? Obviously, I need more coffee.... Thank you in advance!

(44,972 posts)the author, but I don't know how the author arrived to that idea.
defacto7
(13,485 posts)but his threat could be a maneuver to protect the contents. It threatens both sides at the same time which could cause hesitancy by the Dems or maybe pressure by past presidents.
I say it's just an empty hand myself. Poker anyone?
