But, this is some of what we are up against, in 2020. I wish I knew what was on that other sign he seems to be holding. Or, on second thought, maybe not.

It is rather pitiful, really. Simple minds. I have no problem with that other than how it affects us all politically. Sad!

(12,712 posts)I think that was taken into account when those Forefathers debated how the system was going to work, although the idea was about the common person in general.
Today, there is little excuse for so much ignorance and lack of critical thinking and so, the indictment is about willful ignorance ensconced in superficial bias. That could be argued as not fulfilling one's duties, (to be vigilant and informed) as a citizen in order to maintain freedom and the other values we stand for. That's a failure on their part.

(17,781 posts)As an example, I give you Alabama and Tennessee. Not only does this flotsom vote, they vote regularly. Their old, white and have nothing better to do than sit around in a perpetual state of pissed offness and vote every 2 years.

(101,730 posts)But, though it is incidental to the point you are making, I can't help but think this guy probably doesn't know the difference between a Buddhist and a Muslim.
This level of determined ignorance remains beyond frustrating. Buddhists would remind me that we can only make a change within ourselves and thus only impact how we react to such people, but it surely doesn't change the harm we experience from such ignorance.

(10,252 posts)I keep forgetting that I am in samsara, the realm of suffering. So when something ugly, like that poor slob's stupidity and hatred appear before me, I am reminded not to be surprised that we're all here in samsara. Yes the harm we cause ourselves and others is all around us. Buddha did not say that life is great. Do you really think that you have just the right words to change that guy's viewpoint? I certainly don't have that ability. I would probably say angry snarky words to him, hardening his position even further. So my best course is to work on correcting my own faults and short-comings. BTW: Anger is my most frequently-experienced negative emotion. I do a lot of spiritual work around anger. I have not yet been completely and perfectly victorious over anger. But I keep practicing at perfecting the patience to not be agitated and disturbed by it.

(13,776 posts)It certainly feels betterlighter, freer, more compassionateto think that way than to feel anger and contempt. Isnt it strange how its so tempting and easy to slide into bad feelings rather than the good feelings that are just as accessible?
Thanks for the food for thought.

(10,252 posts)We can train our minds and choose to have a different point of view. But will we? My experience is that negative emotions, like anger and greed, are mostly just unconscious long-running bad habits. First comes the intention to change. Then comes the hard work of changing. It's why I tell people that Buddhism is not a religion, but a practice.

I'm not trying to make a funny. This is the work we must do so that our citizens may never again be preyed upon by the evil we are witnessing now and are burden by as a society.
