The GOP has, by design, shifted the Overton Window so much over the last several decades that perception is severely out of whack.

Never Trumpers, for the most part, still subscribe to horrific viewpoints.

They would vote for a turnip for the same reason.

The Republican party in general has shown that experience, competence and integrity no longer mean anything to them.

Even I thought he was being absurd at the time.

So at least in matters of Russian collusion, he has plausible deniability.

The GOP has got to throw the 2020 election. They have no option. Everyone except maybe Mitt Romney is tainted by their association with Trump, and Romney is tainted by not beating Obama in 2012. They also know they don't want to be the ones in the White House when the Trump Collapse happens in 2021.

Therefore, the only thing they can feasibly do is run the most fucked-up ticket in the history of politics; Martin Shkreli and Alex Jones would work for this. (The Constitution doesn't say he can't be president while he's in federal prison, so we'll go on the assumption that he can.) They then give them as little support in the election as possible. After they lose, the GOP cooperates with the Democrats in throwing the entire Trump administration and the twenty worst actors in Congress in prison. Then in 2024 maybe the fact that America's collective attention span is shorter than Trump's dick will convince the voters to give them another chance.

On the trumposlimeoscale he is clean. For the most part he has earned his "conservative (pre trump)" bonafides. He behaves decently - although we would find most of his policies far right - he is nowhere near as bad as Pence.

He hasn't been tainted by being in Congress and playing the role of feckless gop wilter to trump demand types as all gopers serving in congress since 2017 have had to do.

Because if Trump leaves, it means a good number of Republicans will have turned on the dear leader. That will enrage Cult 45 and splinter the Republican base. 2020 would be a landslide of epic proportion.
