MGTOW: Men Going Their Own Way
These guys think that women are pure evil and have ruined EVERYTHING! Men now have no power in modern society and women have all of it.(!)
So they advocate for male separatism: no relations with women whatsoever. If you are married, get divorced! If you are in a relationship with a woman, end it! Going monk - they call it.
And guess who is their great model and exemplar for this lifestyle?
Wait for it.....
BATMAN!!!
Apparently they don't realize that:
a) he's a fictional character
b) he rescues EVERYONE, regardless of gender
c) he has a much loved and respected protege in Batgirl
d) he has a long-term (though complicated and on again, off again) relationship with Catwoman, not to mention other serious girlfriends from time to time.
These guys are so pathetic they don't even realize they're pathetic.
Wow.

(12,712 posts)You come across that stuff if you get around enough online.
Well, they won't be having children most likely, huh? Bringing back the celibate monk style? Well, it's not new.
Seriously though, the more you look into this kind of phenomena, the more it becomes obvious that this is about something more fundamental going on in our culture as a result of rapid change and in regards to adaptation. I can appreciate people enjoying a good laugh or resorting to ridicule, but there have been changes and reactions that are deeply troubling and not being addressed. The prevalence of such changes in behavior and outlook by certain groups could be said to be symptomatic.
There are some people who have looked into it carefully though and may be getting some insight in how to deal with it now in a proactive way. It isn't all that complicated, but it is more intricate than one would imagine from a perfunctory view. There are certain biases that also prevent discussion of it in some arenas. However, it does require more investigation if we want to get to the crux of cause of some of the horrible results we are seeing when it manifests in certain ways.
The more you know...

Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)I wasn't even suggesting that you need to reach them. However, may I suggest that dismissing it simplistically might contribute to a problem we are having.
I see you have your mind made up, but understanding it would be very beneficial to our culture right now. It is not about a simple talking point like that at all. Considering you are not just talking about a small group of young men, it is hard to just brush it aside. Understanding it in depth is quite a mind opener.
Reality is a concept in contrast to actuality. What is reality?

(12,712 posts)It is up to you, of course. I did some research.
I have biases. We all do.
I tend to look at processes, not just contents.
It is a choice.

(12,712 posts)There is research that is trying to understand what is going on with these men's movements. To just condemn them is not a solution and can contribute to the problem. It is more deep and complex than people tend to realize. There are social, cultural, psychological and biological factors that contribute to this.
It helps to have some insight into the issues. The how is more important than the who or why. This could be called a failure of masculinity and does not just center around individuals. This is not about a condemnation of women or feminism and does not even suggest condoning the negative social consequences that erupt from the problem itself. There are people, like Dr. Jordan Peterson and Natalie Wynn, who not only understand what is going on, they are reaching out to them which works much better than merely condemning, denigrating and castigating them even more. It is serious societal problem that deserves more analysis in order to avert the tragic results that can result from the few that break bad.
It is important not to paint the whole thing with a broad brush, of course, just like we wouldn't fall prey to thinking that what some people say about any group applies to all of them as per racism, homophobia, etc.
If you are curious and open, this article goes into the problem more in depth and also has resources. I chose this one for that reason, but you will find scores and scores of studies and much more information on this phenomenon. You will also get an insight about radicalization and what foments it and why this is a growing concern.

(16,616 posts)I'm actually quite interested in this too. In Japan there is a group of men who are somewhat similar (not exactly) and they are a subset of a larger phenomenon. So Japan was where I first read about this, and there were some very in-depth articles but I never printed them out nor could I find them now. It does seem very interesting. I don't really oppose it, or have strong positive or negative opinions about it, as long as they are non-violent. Here is one article I did find:
Young People in Japan Have Given Up on Sex
The evidence: Japans population is declining and is projected to dive a further third by 2060, with fewer babies born in 2012 than in any year on record (and a corollary: adult diapers outselling baby diapers). Haworth cites a survey that found that 61 percent of unmarried men and 49 percent of women aged 18-34 were not in any kind of romantic relationship, and a study showing that 30 percent of people under 30 have never dated. Women in their 20s have a 1 in 4 chance of never marrying, according to the Japanese Population Institute, and a 40 percent chance of remaining child-free. Another study indicates that 45 percent of women and more than 25 percent of men were not interested in or despised sexual contact.

(12,712 posts)We do have some deep and prevalent social issues going on in the world, obviously, and they do relate to various results and reactions we are seeing.
I am glad you brought up the celibacy syndrome in Japan. I have been looking into that myself.
The factors of alienation and isolation play into this. In America, around one in four people don't even have a close friend or confidant, from what studies have shown. That is very much related to the other factors we see emerging. Just how do you have a "society" as opposed to a mere culture, when direct interaction and social bonds are disappearing? That can be a critical thing, overall.
In Japan, they are having a related problem called hikikomori. That's their term for the social isolation phenomenon which is related to many other factors. Here, we just don't have enough awareness or even proper labels yet, (most of them are created by online communities to define themselves). I guess mass alienation or growing social isolation will have to do.
Seeing how human beings tended to be wired to social life due to our survival needs, etc., this is very troubling as a trend. So, for those who are interested, there is more information:

(12,051 posts)I don't know what the MGTOWs are talking about. Hell, you could go there and be a king, even with just a bit of money. But I suspect the poverty lifestyle doesn't agree with them. What they want is a servile woman who will work 40 hours a week as the main breadwinner, to live in a first world country, own all the stuff and be able to dictate his wife's every move; AND be able to outfit his man cave with 10 computers and stay down there indefinitely. Oh, the wife can come down there once in a while to give him a blowjob while he's playing Fortnite.

(7,309 posts)When I was a kid, my brother and I would argue over who we'd like to be, Superman or Batman. His preference was based solely on the ability to fly. I considered other factors. Bruce Wayne was rich, Clark Kent had to work. Wayne Manor and the Batcave vs a fortress of solitude at the north pole. Catwoman or Lex Luther?.
I also liked the sound of "millionaire playboy".
Being a kid, I thought it meant being rich and playing every day. Later when I found out what it really meant, I felt vindicated. Superman was a virgin in love with someone who had no affection for Clark Kent. Bruce Wayne could be seen at society functions with a babe on each arm.
These guys have picked the wrong guy. They should have chosen Jimmy Olsen.

(10,721 posts)...make up a majority of the Republican electorate.
There continue to be Democrats and many members of the media who insist that there are many good Republicans and that right wingers simply have a different take on tax policy, the role of government, etc. That mythological thinking needs to stop, and the sooner it does the better. It's time to be honest about the monster created by the GOP over the last 50 years.
