(33,345 posts)I get tired of comments saying impeachment is a political act. It was for the GOPers, but that doesn't mean it has to be or should be.
Impeachment is a bitter remedy to a situation which has no other.

(297,211 posts)In her most extensive interview about impeachment since she announced plans to open an inquiry this week, Pelosi described herself as "heartbroken" over the revelation that President Donald Trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden. White House disclosures of the conversation and that Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine prior to the conversation unleashed a firestorm in Washington last week.
"I think right now there is a cover-up of a cover-up," she said.
When asked why she moved from the strongest backstop against impeachment to the leader of the effort, she chose brevity: "The facts."
"I have handled this with great care, with moderation, with great attention to what we knew was a fact and what was an allegation.
Yes.. behind the scenes that those dissing and insulting Nancy, and the Dems working closely with her, seemingly didn't even think about.

(25,471 posts)Trump has done everything but beg to be impeached, and I'm not 100% certain that it's not in fact what he's angling for so he can play the victim.
In fact, I've said since he took office that he's been trying to get impeached but the people who could do something about it didn't care. Before January, that was all in the purview of the Republicans. If not for the midterms (and Nancy), we're not here.
Cha

(83,758 posts)You have been so quiet with all that has been happening. You have been off line and missed the news? Let me fill ya in. The pResident met with 3 Russians is a private meeting in 2017. Word is he said he had no problem with their meddling in the 2016 elections as they all stood around laughing.
Another fact you missed. The transcript is out! tRump asked for an investigation from Ukraine. He wanted made up details about Hunter Biden. He threatened to withhold aide to the Ukraine, an ally, for a favor. A favor to get information on a political opponent to once again let him steal the election.
All of this is unlawful and an unconstitutional abuse of power. Correct. She had no choice but call for an formal impeachment inquiry. She is a brilliant and courageous woman that counted every damn vote before she did. You seem to think her stupid. She is not. She made her move only after she had the votes to do so.

Interesting. I keep hearing about a grand strategy but here she says there was no choice.
We had one chance to do this. One. This was planned. Well choregraphed. And she had the power of the Democratic Congress behind her.
Sorry you are so displeased with her abilities.
PS, You should listen to her speech. She was magnificent and did not rely on tweets to deliver her message. She is bold and spoke directly to the American people.

If you think that all this began with a whistleblower, then sadly you have not been paying attention. This has been going on for years with the start of the Mueller Investigations. You think Congress is not watching the idiot in the WH? I beg to differ.
A bit of history.
Martha Mitchell: The Woman Nobody Believed About Watergate
Martha Mitchell, wife of Attorney General John Mitchell, was the first Watergate whistleblower but she was silenced, discredited, and all but forgotten.
Whistleblowing is a lonely road. Without knowing whether the public will deem them heroes or traitors or even believe their claims at all whistleblowers take an incredible risk with no certain payoff.
And if you happen to be a known gossip reporting unprecedentedly corrupt acts committed by high-ranking government officials who are deeply trusted by the public at large? Then youre definitely in trouble.
Martha Mitchell did exactly that and paid the price. And the details of her nearly forgotten fame and misfortune as a whistleblower during the early days of the Watergate era, including the deplorable treatment she received at the hands of U.S. government and men working on its behalf, are hard to believe to this day.

For some, her commentary could go too far. In the Slate podcast Slow Burn, Leon Neyfakh describes Nixon at one point telling his chief of staff, We need to turn off Martha.
In the spring of 1972, John Mitchell resigned as attorney general to become Nixons campaign manager for his reelection. And in June, Martha joined her husband in California for several campaign events. It was there, on the night of June 17, that John Mitchell got a call about some arrests made at the Watergate Hotel.
According to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, Mitchell realized that if his wife found out that she knew one of the men arrested, James McCord, she might become upset and tell reporters about it, thus tipping them off to the connection between the burglars and the president. So as he headed back to Washington, he instructed security guards working for the campaign to keep his wife in the dark in California and to stop her from calling members of the media.
But find out she did, and just as her husband predicted, she soon called UPIs Helen Thomas.
Im sick and tired of the whole operation, she said, before telling Thomas she was giving her husband an ultimatum her or Nixon.

(83,758 posts)Pelosi: Impeachment worth losing House in 2020 (article/video)
https://thehill.com/homenews/house/463527-pelosi-impeachment-worth-losing-house-in-2020
During an interview at Tribune Fest, hosted by the Texas Tribune, Pelosi argued that following Congress' mandate to hold the president accountable is more important than politics.
"Heading into the next election cycle, do you have any anxiety at all about any of the stuff we're talking about...impacting your ability to hold control of the House in 2020?" Tribune CEO Evan Smith asked.
"It doesnt matter," Pelosi responded. "Our first responsibility is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
"People say you have to take a political risk doing that," she continued. "That doesn't matter. That doesn't matter. Because we cannot have a president of the United States undermining his oath of office, his loyalty to his oath of office, undermining our national security, and undermining the integrity of our elections."

(43,161 posts)Most people say impeachment is a political act, because it involves politicians and Congress. But on closer examination, impeachment of Bill Clinton was political because it was cooked up.
THIS, today, as she states, is not political because it the violations of law are so clear, and Democrats are cloaking themselves in the Constitution, just as framers intended. Remarkable take on today.

(54,378 posts)Brooks, ever the Republican partisan, despite brief moments of lucidity, argued against impeachment since it wasn't a legal requirement, but rather a political option, and Pelosi was not a prosecutor obliged by law to pursue a crime shown to have been committed.
Brooks probably justifies Russia's invasion of the eastern Ukraine by saying it was in self-defense.

(3,676 posts)But tRump pushed it way too far with the call to the Ukraine.
The call is the smoking gun and there are likely lots more where that came from.
You would think that the Mueller report with 10 counts of obstruction would be enough but Barr intervened and we may never see the full report.
tRump is such a doofus and so ham handed with his mafia like tactics there has to be a dozen or so examples like the Ukraine call.
I hope all the people who say the dam has burst are right, and all the stool pigeons are going to come out of the woodwork.

(10,721 posts)I'm cautiously optimistic that it won't. As long as Dems turn up a lot more hard evidence and get some very damaging testimony (causing support for impeachment to continue to rise), we'll come out on top even if the Senate doesn't convict.
But one can't overestimate the ignorance of the American public and the evilness of the GOP, so there is a chance this could backfire.
That said, Pelosi is right that there's no choice. Without impeachment, Dems set a precedent that says a president can do anything he/she wants to do. In a sane country, Trump never would have sniffed the nomination. In an even remotely sane country, Trump would have been thrown out of office back in 2017. But the US is like a giant insane asylum and we are fighting to survive.
