We naturally settled near water, so population density is higher there.

In cities, it’s easier to see what your taxes pay for: libraries, parks, road construction, bridges, ambulances, police, firefighters.

But out in the boonies, you don’t see much or any of that. This gives rise to the feeling that you’re paying taxes to a bunch of bureaucrats who spend it on themselves or squander it on unimportant stuff. That makes people ripe for hate radio pickin’.

Makes sense, esp'ly about the rural areas. Except, of course, they have operations like the REA.

Since you asked...Middle and landlocked states don't get exposed to immigrant cultures as much, and don't need to develop cross-cultural awareness. That's also why cities tend to be blue and vote democratic, because their populations are more diverse.

Also, gotta add that lack of diversity leads to isolation and inbreeding, which happens more in red areas, and leads to more dumb asses.
