(6,831 posts)But also to catch another Buddy: Buddy Rich, the greatest jazz drummer to ever live. Carson would always give Rich the stage to play anything he wanted. Carson was a frustrated drummer, and actually quite good. He had a full kit at home, set up by Rich himself, that duplicated his complete set-up.
Buddy Rich was also quite funny, himself. He had a wicked, dry sense of humor. After he had had one of his many heart-attacks, his first performance was on Carson. He told this story - that while he was being wheeled into the ER, there was a nurse, rushing along-side the gurney asking him questions. She asked if he had any allergies, to which Rich replied, "Yeah. Country-western."
He died waaaay too soon. His drumming was just . . . inspired.

(41,960 posts)Duke U. once had a famous diet program that many famous people went to, and it involved a whole lot of walking. She and I were both employed at Duke at the time. We were at Sams, a well known convenience store, and ran into Mr. Hackett there.
To say my friend was well endowed would not do her justice. I was pretty sure he was going to do the eyeball-popping a-OOOOO-gah thing. She was also a sweet, gracious woman who could bless your heart without making it sound like an insult. And she did. But we laughed about it for years. 😄

(21,625 posts)I remember once, in the '80s, he told another little chestnut about (of course) his dick.
"I don't mind telling you I have a small penis - everybody knows that. So recently, I got a penile implant."
"I looks like an elephant trunk - and what the doctor didn't tell me, is that it has a mind of its own!"
"Why, the other night I was at one of these fancy charity dinners the Upper East Side ladies like to host. Ten waiters were going around giving everyone a hot potato as an appetizer."
"But before I knew it, the elephant trunk snatched the potato!"
"So the lady beside me says, 'oh, I see you've already finished your potato - delicious , weren't they?' And before I could answer, it snatched her potato!"
"Five seconds later, a waiter walks up to me and asks: 'sir, would you like another potato?' "
"I would," I says, "but I don't think there's room for another potato in my ass!"

(41,960 posts)Im not sure who. One of the typical Carson crew back then. Apparently he shot way into a little stand of shrubbery and went off looking for the ball. He was in there a long time, and just when they were going to play on he came running out of the bushes, stark naked, screaming Locusts! Locusts!
Definitely a wish-I-had-been-there moment.
Thanks for sharing!
