Narcissus didn't fall in love with himself; he fell in love with his reflection. Narcissists are in love with the image they try to project. A narcissist's ego is damaged when the reflection he gets from others doesn't match the one he's trying to project, and if he knows that the reflection is actually truer (which he does, which is why he's not actually in love with himself), he will fly into a vindictive rage.
