At the heart of the impeachment inquiry facing President Trump is a report from a still-anonymous whistleblower. The president and many of his supporters are demanding a name and even threatening severe punishment. But what rights does a whistleblower have and how did the federal law that protects those who point out fraud and abuse in government come to be?
Joining me now is John Phillips, a founding partner at the law firm Phillips and Cohen and a former ambassador to Italy in the Obama administration. He helped author the modern-day False Claims Act, which protects government whistleblowers. Thanks for joining us.

Not often a President of the United States hints at whistleblowers being like spies, and need to be executed, like in the 'good old days'.
There are rabid Trump supporters out there cleaning their guns right now just waiting for a name or address . . . . and Trump would be happy to give details to them via Twitter.

If you are old enough to know Elliot Ness in 'The Untouchables', that's the world Trump lives in. And Elliot Ness is Trump's enemy.

But defining what irks you, and why, then passing information on, takes another level of courage.
Let there be many more who make the move to speak up. Despite threats from Don.

(10,072 posts)Traitor Trump is in the most powerful position in the world and the pathetic little wimp is whining about rights. People with huge amounts of power don't need any rights. Their power, if wielded legally and with intelligence, ensures all the rights they will ever need. But becauseTrump is an idiot all he can do is whine about his rights.
Grow up, act like an adult and resign already you pathetic sad monster.

(6,715 posts)He swore to protect the constitution and the laws of the US. The whistleblower statute is a law he swore to uphold. The WB statute says the WB's superiors must protect the whistleblowers identity.
If Trump does not do that. i.e. Protect the WB identity, that, in and of itself is a high crime and impeachable offense.
