1. We're broke, and at full employment, so a major effort like WWII is unthinkable in any case...

It's unthinkable for pretty much anyone else, too, although China would have the best shot if it ever came to that.

Oh, yeah, our industrial base is not what it used to be, so replacements of even basic stuff like boots and uniforms would be tough, after we reinstated the draft and got a few million more soldiers and sailors. Popping out a dozen or so Liberty Ships a week is laughable.

A big shot at Maersk should know that our shipyards have been useless for pretty much anything but emergency repair work, barges, and Navy vessels. Korea is the big, bad boy in shipbuilding now. Said big shot would also know that the US has the largest commercial fleet in the world, including tankers, but it's all flagged out under "foreign" ownership.

While the Pentagon has been talking about the "two front war", everyone knows damn well that such a thing is impossible these days. What we have is a badass military that can try to beat up Afghanistan if it has to, but cannot ever again fight a world war. All the players know that the world's militaries are to fight local conflicts or to be paper tigers to avoid nuclear war.

That's it-- we don't let Ukraine into NATO so the Russians can take it over without a whimper from us, and the Chinese can expand over the Pacific without a complaint.

It's a whole new world out there.
