Republicans who back impeachment can save the country -- and the GOP

Sept. 30, 2019, 4:16 AM EDT
By Sarah Longwell, executive director of Defending Democracy Together

... Ditching Nixon proved to be in the best long-term interests of the party. Abandoning Donald Trump will, as well. The country once again needs a revitalized GOP. Trumpism needs to be exorcized from the party of Lincoln and Reagan ...

And some sort of longer range vision than the next election?

A corrupt person might think "I don't have to go down with him" before providing the highest-minded reasons to withdraw support

And a more ethical person might have have higher-minded reasons to withdraw support but in some contexts still say nothing more than "I don't have to go down with him"

is that many in politics and business have a next quarter/next election mindset that obsesses on the immediate and ignores the long range.

Every trumper should go down with the traitor.

That photo you posted -- look at Moscow Mitch trying to appear to be just another "good ole boy". I despise that selfish, lying, greed-driven rat.

We can hope, but I think we need to be calling their senators and representatives and screaming at them.

It's so easy too, if not calling, every one of us can write a brief summary on each reps online Contact Page.

I don’t see a way forward for the republican party.

They have spent years winning elections by denying reality. Evolution is a hoax. Tax cuts pay for themselves. Christians are under attack. People of color are out to take what is yours. Democrats are godless evil socialists.

They have taken these stands publicly for decades.

At the same time they have blasted the country with propaganda. Talk radio drums right wing lies into commuters ears for an hour every day.

The brain washing is so complete that any republican who admits reality is threatened. Used to be just with primaries but now with violence.

How can an honest conservative “take back” party? Why would anyone honest want to he associated with Rush, Alex Jones, Malkin, Coulter, the Drudge Report, free republic and last but certainly not least the hypocritical evangelists.

Not only is there no possibility of changing the base, no self respecting person would want to be associated with them.

Starting over may be the only option.
