Student says she fabricated story about classmates cutting her dreadlocks

A sixth grader at Virginia private school admitted Monday she lied when she told news outlets three of her classmates pinned her down and cut some of her dreadlocks, her school told CNN. Amari Allan, 12, told CNN last week her classmates had held her down and called her "ugly" and "nappy" while cutting several of her dreadlocks with scissors, but her family issued an apology Monday after the school confirmed the assault did not happen.

“We can now confirm that the student who accused three of her classmates of assault has acknowledged that the allegations were false," Stephen Danish, head of Immanuel Christian School, said in a statement shared with CNN.

Allan’s family also issued an apology in a statement shared with CNN. The family apologized to the accused students and their families and the administrators for the “pain and anxiety these allegations have caused.” The family also apologized for betraying the trust of the “broader community, who rallied in such passionate support for our daughter.”

"We understand there will be consequences, and we're prepared to take responsibility for them," Allan’s family said. "We know that it will take time to heal, and we hope and pray that the boys, their families, the school and the broader community will be able to forgive us in time."

A spokesperson for the school was not immediately available for comment.

Third time I've seen an article addressing this. Did no one ask the family WHY she did it? hlthe2b Sep 2019 #2

And yet, my search of DU shows nothing.

Even just right now,
did a search, and got nothing,
not even this thread.

Main reason I stopped posting to 'Late Breaking News'.

I'll find nothing on a search.
Post the thread.
Have it kicked off as a duplicate.

Wasted time and effort.
In my humble opinion, of course.

And I was criticizing the 'search' option,
not you.

Why did she do it?
My guess,
a grudge against the other students.

Wanting to go to a different school
Issues with peers etc
Issues with the kids that she accused this of.
Tried to cut her hair herself and realized she was making a mistake.

There are lots of reasons. She's a kid and unfortunately, this went from a simple lie to a front page story. (Most of these types of stories don't make it to the press) The parents don't owe us a reason.

According to the family, she "embellished" the details of that altercation. Maybe she wanted people to pay attention to her, or maybe she wanted to get back at the three boys by getting them in trouble. Maybe a bit of both. To their credit, the family issued an apology for her actions, and not a "to anyone who was hurt" faux-pology.

I believe this is what they call “a teachable moment.” We all could probably stand to be a little more patient when stories like this come out. Myself included.

Those who caution against a rush to judgment and advise against jumping to conclusions are sometimes shouted down for doing so. I've learned through experience that it makes my life on DU a lot simpler if I keep such thoughts to myself.
