Shaking down one government and withholding military aid; asking other foreign governments to investigate US intelligence employees to exonerate himself re the Russian involvement in the 2016 elections and using the Department of Justice , the State Department and who knows what other departments for this self serving criminality.

(117 posts)The Constitution defines treason as specific acts, namely "levying War against [the United States], or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."
Yes, this is serious for Trump to blackmail countires he has promised aid to but not treason. We have no declared wars and haven't since WWII.

(15,601 posts)As the crime is very specifically defined in the constitution. Let's not fall into the same inaccurate hyperbole as Trump.
It's certainly a betrayal of the country and the oath of office, and I know that doesn't roll off the tongue as quickly as "Treason!"...but "Betrayal!" only has one more syllable...

(15,601 posts)the crime of Treason requires "aid and comfort" to an enemy in a declared war, or waging war on the US.
I guess if Trump tried to lead an armed brigade from one of his rallies to overthrow the US government, then that *might* meet the definition of treason...

Hopefully, there will be prosecutions, period.

(33,331 posts)You have no idea whether or not I will be disappointed.
You cannot know "there will be no prosecutions for treason".
It is unlikely that anyone will be charged with treason, simply because of the punishments Congress has declared for treason in the U.S. Code. In spite of this, Trump and others in his circle have committed treason as defined in the U.S. Constitution.

(21,742 posts)Just extrapolating the written definition. There is always a first act of war and I'm wondering where that "first act of war" falls into the definition.
