(17,931 posts)They're meaner and far less entertaining than the charismatic faith healing types who follow the more widely known televangelists. For instance, people like Falwell Jr., Franklin Graham, John Hagee and virtually all Southern Baptists. Though they won't say it in public, but they think the charismatics are low brow and nutty. I think they're all nutty.

(1,115 posts)The Sea of Galilee (actually a lake) is also Kurd territory?
If you follow the genealogy given for Jesus it included both the
paternal and maternal family lines because of harems. They
stayed in the family. A curious note is that king Mithridates VI
(the poison king) had a harem and, of course he came from a
Harem. He had a brother named Chrestus. Mithridates took his
sister as a wife and went on an excursion. When he came back
he discovered an extra child in his harem that belonged to his
wife/sister and their brother Chrestus.
Years later his great general (Archelaus) comes into being
and historians believe he is related to king Mithridates. General
Archelaus* comes into has a heritage that produces the "kings
of Cappadocia". The last king of Cappadocia fits a vague description
of Jesus' grandfather Jacob. The last king of Cappadocia died in
Rome in 17 A.D. It may be that this Jacob had a brother named
Chrestus. Actually there were several religious leaders called
Chrestus which means "the Good".
What I am thinking is that these Kurds, and there are millions of them,
may be precious to Americans. Oh, they are not Christians, they are
Chrestians.
*Archelaus may be this extra child in the harem. Archelaus' grandson (or son)
married an Egyptian queen, maybe an aunt of Cleopatra.
I am not qualified to talk about these Eastern nations. We came
to America on the boats after the Mayflower, I just love the lore.

I don't recall ever hearing anything about Mary's or Joseph's parents. To my knowledge, there has never yet been unearthed any historical record of Jesus. So where did a name and some "vague description" of a Grandpa Jacob come from?
Edited to add: You also mention "the genealogy given for Jesus." Is this in the Bible? Is that where Jacob is mentioned?

(1,115 posts)"I do not know" is why I use question marks. When we get into
allowing the murdering of cults in the holy land and claim not to be
atheist and truly believe, then we should know what we are
getting into.
The gospels mention "Nazareth" and "Galilee" which are in
Cappadocia. I was trying to follow the genealogy of the
last king of Cappadocia in comparison to the patriarch Jacob
and did good until Mithridates V and his Persian wife. I wondered
if the genealogy of his wife was the one that was used for Jesus
because this is where I discovered Chrestus' (plural). Chrestus
came from her genealogy and not Mithridates, who was a Seleucid
(Greek).
Reading Thiering I am convinced the good book is historically
accurate and feel that I should offer a word of caution. Thiering
mentions the old age of Jacob and the old age of the last king
of Cappadocia is a historical fact.
Thanks, and you are welcome to ignore what I write ... be happy!

(8,361 posts)There is a conflict between the politics of Jesus and the politics of Trump, said Wallis. Racial bigotry is a deal breaker for the Gospel. White nationalism, which Donald Trump embraces and champions, isnt just racist its anti-Christ. Dehumanizing immigrants isnt just racist its anti-Christ. Demeaning women isnt just sexist its anti-Christ. At some point, Christians have to ask themselves: Are the teachings of Christ going to be followed or not?
For the sake of our nations integrity and the most vulnerable in our society, we call on fellow Christians to support the current impeachment inquiry, read the statement. Now is the time to shine the light of truth.

(36,829 posts)Political Christians rather than Christians of faith.
They support Trump who says he is so perfect that he does not need Christ or his forgiveness.
Like today's evangelical/religious right supporters, Trump is a Political Christian, not a Christian of faith.
Evangelicals/religious right are easily able to spin their beliefs for political expediency.
The Donald who does not have to ask Jesus for forgiveness.
The Donald who ridicules Holy Communion.

(10,624 posts)Trump is just an extreme example.
I'm supposed to love other people, just like I believe that God loves them. And I'm supposed to forgive others for the bad things that they do, just as I hope God will forgive me for the shitty things I've done. (And even more so for all the good things I *could* have done, but didn't.) But I just can't abide what these people have been doing in our name.
I don't favor an open border, and I understand that immigration must have limits. But separating families, sometimes permanently, is so unacceptable. Some of those children might never recover from the damage inflicted on them. All just to "prove a point" and appear "tough" on immigration.
And the so-called good Christians who just don't care - who blame the desperate parents and say "that's what they get" - I find it very hard to break bread with such people. I can't understand them at all. There is something fundamentally different between them and me.
And it isn't just that issue. It's pretty much all of them. All of their policies seek to comfort the comfortable and/or afflict the afflicted. They should just go ahead and change the party motto to "Am I my brother's keeper?". Although, if they think the answer to that question is "no", then I'm pretty sure they missed the whole point.

About 2:55 on the timeline.
"Let me tell you," he continued. "If Jesus Christ gets down off the cross and told me Trump is with Russia, I would tell him, hold on a second, I need to check with the president if it is true. That is how confident I feel in the president."
