The only thing that matters wrt impeachment and removal

are the Republican senators. Some of them must have been non-committal on if they could excuse investigating a current political opponent. They knew the fact of a quid-pro-quo was going to (or had already) come out, so they decided to just bite the bullet and make it about the kooky DNC server conspiracy. I'd be very surprised if they didn't already have assurances from senators that that is a b.s. story they can get behind.

I didn't think about the fact that that probably only needs a majority. I think the problem is that no one is going to vote to bar him from running if the impeachment charges fail to convict. I think even many Democrats would vote no on that if impeachment fails.
