(11,744 posts)Malcolm Nance was talking about that with Stephanie Miller about 2 months back. We could likely shut down or do serious damage to Russian infrastructure with a cyber attack. Nance said two things were holding the US back.
1. The Russian meddling while correctly believed to be done with the approval of the state, are de-centralized and in a position of deniability. If we hit Russian infrastructure, then it is an "act of war" and we'd have escalated a situation.
2. Nance said that while Russians are dangerous, our capabilities are better and it would be like an elephant squashing a gnat. We may be seen as "bullies".
I don't think that they are ahead of us by any means. They exploited social issues that We have not resolved (racism, sexism, etc) and right wingers have created the environment where we can be exploited in their own quest to hold onto power. They don't have the numbers but they have the money, power, and media control.
