I'm very fond of him. Hoping for a quick recovery.

(2,596 posts)The pelvis may not be a hip, but it's significant. Also, it's worrying that he's fallen twice in quick succession, with injuries. It might be a symptom that the brain tumor is back and spreading.

(10,126 posts)Sounds like it has been cracked - not displaced so there's a good chance it will heal without significant medical intervention - which would be more dangerous for someone elderly. They said he looks forward to recovering at home.
His cancer could have returned and caused it. But there are a lot of medicals reasons why an elderly person like Jimmy could become susceptible to falling. Let's wait and see what they say.

(58,785 posts)for my mother in law 30 years ago, considered too fragile for surgery and tragically condemned to a bedbound misery that made death a mercy, but now they pin most of those back together.
Of course, it's true that most fragile, elderly people don't live very long and true that broken hips are not good indicators for longevity, and it's true that some too demented and/or weak even for today's fixes.
At least Carter is still active and still has most of his marbles at 95, though, and that correlates strongly with increased lifespan.

(70,516 posts)W/out more knowledge and a medical degree I don't know what the future is for Jimmy but it
could be close to the end. Often after somebody is bed bound other prior medical problems can
manifest themselves. I hope Jimmy gets back home (when he is ready), gets any needed and
approiate support there, and has a chance to enjoy his time w/family and friends.
Again I hope I am wrong about President Carter's health. Both he and Rosalyn Carter to still
be "out there" building houses for the needy @ their ages is amazing.

I think we can assume his life working on construction sites is nearing its end. Very hopeful he'll still be visiting them for a while.

(8,003 posts)who was at least as active as Jimmy Carter, was working out at the Y, and slipped and fell in the shower there. She died a few days later, while still in the hospital. It's not a death sentence, but there is a big risk factor. Sadly, falling frequently is another bad sign.

(58,785 posts)I can only wish I'd fall on my head and end it then and there, skip the broken hip and the "old man's friend," pneumonia.
My aunt lived to 103 and started having serious balance problems in her mid 90s. She'd had a couple of cancers that were taken care of, and increasing balance problems and falls were the only reason she had to finally give up living completely on her own and move to assisted living. A broken hip early on didn't do it. She had home care and rehab for that until she was back on her feet again.

It sounds as though you have great genes.

Time to go for a walk maybe.

(111,102 posts)I always thought of Jimmy Carter as an extremely devout Christian man. He has relied on his faith in his God to pull him through whatever crisis he has ever encountered. I'm sure that he will say that whatever happens is God's will. He has the faith of a saint.

(15,540 posts)We all love Jimmy Carter, but the man is 95 years old and it's quite obvious that he isn't going to sit in a rocking chair for whatever remains of his life. Speaking for myself, I'd rather die doing the things that give my life purpose than trying to hang on for another year or two by taking it easy.
So my wishes for this wonderful man is that he is kept comfortable while healing and that his life ends doing whatever gives him pleasure. When that happens, he can go to his "great reward" knowing that he was loved and admired by millions and millions of people.

(2,596 posts)This was back in about 2000 and he fell off a ladder while hanging sheetrock. (I get the clangs about even geting on a ladder and I'm about a decade and half younger than he was). He underwent surgery and recovered completely, but early on occasionally used a cane for a time. Then his mental health went into a decline sometime around the first of the year, following a major influenza infection. I think the two events so close together walloped him. Obviously, he was probably already in the very early onset of dementia, but had not been evidencing symptoms detectable to any of us at the time. But by April of that year, he was having problems remembering directions and then had a psychotic break. We were totally freaked by this, but his internist told my brother and me that it's very common for the elderly to "fall off a cliff" insofar as their cognitive abilities. He said people can rock along in a coping state for a great deal of time, but a significant illness, certainly any major medical issue such as a hip fracture and major surgery to repair/reset it (primarily caused by anesthesia) can have significant impact on dementia, Alzheimers, and other brain-related issues. My died in 2005 and he didn't recognize any of us by that time.
