Democrats would not accept a Trumper; Republicans probably would not accept a Never Trumper, so who would it be?

(23,018 posts)There would be no VP if Pence success Trump via impeachment. At least until the next election.

(35,699 posts)25th amendment i believe.
berni_mccoy
(23,018 posts)That won't happen.
No one filled LBJ's VP vacancy when he became POTUS after Kennedy was assassinated.
There already is built-in succession so it's not necessary.

(35,699 posts)The better historical analogy is Nixon-Agnew-Ford-Rockefeller
After the Kennedy assassination there was concern about the danger of a VP vacancy, particularly during the tense times of the Cold War. So the 25th amendment was proposed and ratified. Then around the time of Watergate VP Agnew was forced to resign over bribe taking as Governor of Maryland. Nixon nominated Ford and he was ratified by a Democratically controlled Congress (House and Senate). Then when Nixon resigned and Ford became President, Ford nominated Rockefeller and he was confirmed by again, a Democratically controlled Congress. Ford of course pardoned Nixon, which weakened him in the 1976 election and made it a bit easier for Carter to win. The Reagan challenge of Ford also hurt him with Republican conservatives. Ford tried to mollify the conservatives by choosing Dole as a running mate rather than sticking with the liberal (for a Republican) Rockefeller but it didn't really work because Dole was seen as a somewhat abrasive "hatchet man" at the time.

(23,550 posts)involved in Russia but just as dangerous as trump and pence. So when trump gets impeached we will struggle with a different right wing money grubbing a hole who would be our new president.
That's my prediction.

(13,466 posts)Trump may have been contemplating removing Pence from the ticket in 2020 anyway.

(3,363 posts)requires approval of both Houses of Congress. Pelosi will never allow an evil Trump pick to get approved.
I think that's how Nixon ended up with Ford - a moderate Republican acceptable to both parties.

(174 posts)to think that pence, too, will go down for complicity, leaving Pelosi next in line?
OliverQ
(3,363 posts)It's still almost a zero percent chance that Republicans convict and remove Trump from office. They sure as heck will never in a million years convict Pence too knowing Pelosi would become President.

(22,037 posts)I think since the day Manafort selected him to be the VP candidate, Pence has seen this as his chance to become president.
Like his boss, Pence is an idiot.

(17,863 posts)His political career is over either way. His best play is to continue to be the loyal VP without exposing himself too much legally. Or they may have a bargain regarding pardons for each other.
Either in December, 2020 or December, 2024 there will be the pardon express. I bet dozens of them floating to the principles.

If Trump is impeached and removed, Nancy Pelosi will be first in line until a new president is elected.

(19,993 posts)The possibilities are endless now that you don't need any public service experience, brains, talent, or integrity to hold the highest office in the land. The only qualification is the willingness to lie your ass off on an hourly basis.

(18,663 posts)Prevent a VP from becoming President if the office becomes vacant. The VP would have to be impeached and then removed before the President.
