It just occurred to me that he'd lose that money. It would go to Pence, wouldn't it?

(34,402 posts)3. He could actually run in 2020 according to this:
Could Donald Trump be impeached, convicted, and then re-elected?
By Austin Sarat October 2, 2019
The launching of an official impeachment inquiry into Donald Trumps conduct has sailed America into largely uncharted waters.
While there have been demands for the impeachment of many presidents, just threeAndrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clintonhave faced formal impeachment inquiries, and the Senate convicted none of them. None of those three sought reelection.
After Johnsons acquittal, he was denied his partys presidential nomination. Nixon and Clinton were in their second terms already and could not run for reelection.
Trump, however, is already doing so.
As a scholar of American legal and political history, I have studied the precedents for dealing with this strange conundrum. A little-known wrinkle in the Constitution might allow Trump to be reelected president in 2020 even if he is removed from office through the impeachment process.

(7,525 posts)7. An impeachment conviction can come with disqualification for federal office
The Constitution states,
"Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States; but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law."
The Senate has historically held that they have the power to decide on removal from office and disqualification to hold office separately from one another. For example, the Senate removed Alcee Hastings as a judge from the Southern District of Florida for bribery but he currently serves in the House of Representatives because the Senate did not further disqualify him. On the other hand Thomas Porteous was stripped of his judgeship in the Eastern District of Louisiana and further disqualified for federal office.

What candidates cant do with leftover money is use it for personal expenses. Retiring federal lawmakers used to be able to pocket extra cash and use it for cars, vacations, clothes, pet grooming, whatever but that changed in 1989 with the passage of the Ethics Reform Act.

we shouldn't give any credibility to the acceptance of a President Pence. Pence should go down along with Trump, Pompeo, Guiliani, Mulvany, Perry and Barr.
