CNN LATEST on "Impeachment Inquiry"

Impeachment inquiry

Was there a quid pro quo or wasn't there a quid pro quo? That's one of the biggest questions in this impeachment inquiry, and testimony from Bill Taylor, the top US diplomat in Ukraine, seems to point toward "yes." Taylor informed House Democrats yesterday that he was told the release of military aid to Ukraine would depend on a pledge to probe the 2016 election and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Dems are calling the admission a smoking gun and a "sea change" that may alter the course of the impeachment process and make it even more complicated. For instance, Taylor's testimony contradicts the claims of Gordon Sondland, the US ambassador to the European Union. Sondland said President Trump had told him there was no quid pro quo, whereas all Taylor's testimony was missing was, well, the Latin itself. Some Democrats wondered aloud whether Sondland should return to Capitol Hill for another round of questions.

(CNN) - US top Ukraine diplomat Bill Taylor testified Tuesday that he was told US politics could hold up aid, contradicting US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland.

CNN obtained his opening statement. Here are the key points from Taylor's bombshell testimony, along with other things that happened Tuesday and what's on the docket for Wednesday:

1. Possible political hold on aid money

2. Officials wanted Ukraine to publicly commit on political investigations

3. Inconsistencies with Sondland

4. The desired investigations included 2016 and Burisma, the company that paid Hunter Biden

5. Sondland will have a side

6. Democrats said Taylor's testimony was damning for Trump

7. Republicans had the opposite view

8. Back to work

Taylor plans to return to Ukraine on Wednesday, according to CNN's report. The previous ambassador, Marie Yovanovitch, was recalled by Trump. (Her testimony was also explosive.) The US special envoy for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, abruptly quit his volunteer role shortly after the whistleblower complaint was released. That leaves a man who may believe the US President was improperly involving US politics in Ukraine as the country's point person there. After his testimony, it's hard to understand how he represents the Trump administration. It's also hard to imagine the optics of him being recalled.

It's a shame that no one relied to keep regular, timely, CNN updates of the "Impeachment Inquiry" better publicized.

However, every morning, I will keep offering this news, as soon s possible.
