There will be a lot more Republican grass roots support for reducing the military budget

than people expect.

When the compromise on raising the deficit ceiling was finalized and it included a mandatory reduction in the defense spending (if a compromise is not agreed to) I thought that the President had pulled a fast one on the Republicans.

I called three of my Republican relatives and pointed out what I thought was a clever end around.

All three of them said that they thought that the President was brilliant on the issue and that they were all for it, they knew that the defense budget had been bloated but that it had become so politicized that there was no way out. All of them wanted defense spending drastically reduced.

That the President has brought this out now shows how brilliant his strategic moves are. He will force the Republican primary candidates to go on the other side of the issue. I suspect that they have done extensive polling on the issue and know that it will be another major problem for them in the general election. Ron Paul will also give a valuable assist by showing up to the debates and arguing that the cuts are not large enough.

Watching the President box the Republicans in really looks like a pro against amateurs.
