NEW: Problem with new election equipment delays voting in Georgia county

A glitch with Georgia’s new voter check-in computers delayed polls from opening in Decatur County for about 45 minutes Tuesday morning, and several voters left without casting their ballots.

Election officials decided to keep precincts open an hour later, until 8 p.m., to accommodate voters who didn’t wait for the problem to be resolved, said Carol Heard, chief elections officials for Decatur County, located near the Florida border.

Decatur is one of six counties testing Georgia’s new voting system during Tuesday’s elections before it’s rolled out statewide to 7.4 million registered voters during the March 24 presidential primary. Most Georgia voters were still using the state’s 17-year-old voting technology Tuesday.“This is a pilot. Let’s get these kinks resolved now before March 24,” Heard said. “My hair was red before today. Now it’s gray.”

Is all of this fancy/broken-ass technology just being used to get the results the same night?

I'm honestly and open-mindedly interested in whether there is a valid reason for not doing it the old-fashioned way.

It's hard to convince a county or state that just poured dozens of millions into new voting machines to get rid of them and go to paper ballots.
