The Republicons refused to even have a hearing to fill a seat on the SCOTUS saying it was

it was an election year, let the people decide. Now they say we can't have hearings to impeach Trump because the election is next year, let the people decide.

It's the same posture.

Keep the status quo (vacant seat/president), rather than having Congress change things up when there is an election around the corner.
